Had a skunk by the back door. He looked in through the glass as we looked out. After I thought he wandered off, I grabbed the 22 and stepped out the door. He was not in the yard but was 2 feet from my left foot. Luckily, he was as scared of me as I was of him, so we each sprinted in opposite directions. Too close for comfort. I’ve been hunting him, so I’m glad he didn’t take offense. By far the closest I’ve ever been to a live skunk.

Situations like that are when you get so jumpy you land up hurting yourself.

Man I hate skunks. I usually don't tend to kill things Im not going to eat, but Ive chased a skunk at night with a flashlight, and a 22 in my underwear when it was below freezing outside, that's how much I hate them.

It is wise to choose when and where one kills a skunk. They generally have the last word(or action).
I usually walk to the blind without a flashlight. Several times I've done a QUICK about-face and double time!!

They are actually kind of funny little guys. Hog hunting I have had them follow me, walk close to me etc... they seem more curious at times.

I was sitting cross-legged in the dark against a Tpost beside a road one morning when one came by me in one of the ruts. When he went by he was no more than a foot from my knees. I just knew I was going to get hosed.

If they aren't trying to dig under your house or close out buildings leave them alone. Good predator to have around, but will be lured in by pet food left out. If they show up during the day shoot it and dispose of it.

One decided to reach in one of my dukes dp traps back in the spring.. what I learned is that the skunk smell you smell driving down the highway does not compare to the smell of a skunk up close and personal.. if you’re ever in that situation, shoot and back out for at least an hour before returning to said trap.. sick

I whacked 2 of them last week, 1 at my barn and the other checking my feeder. Sure glad my lab is trained she jumped out of the SXS and was on a hard sprint to get the one at the feeder.she stopped and came back to me thank goodness. The one at the barn was living in there and I caught him sitting outside sunning himself.

Back years ago when I was a barefoot kid running around the woods with some friends we came upon a skunk. I had always heard a skunk has to have its tail up to spray. We danced around the skunk. It kept hopping around pointing its rear end at one or another. I dashed in and grabbed it by the tail and lifted it up. Did not spray. Held it for a couple of minutes and then wondered what next? So I threw it at one of my buddies and hauled a**. We still laugh about it to this day. True story.

Caught one recently just outside camp in one of my Dukes traps. It released the stink as soon as I shot it. Man, that smell stayed around for two days!

M<any years ago I had two coons, a possum, and a skunk that would fight over cat food when I would forget and leave it out. They would fight, knock over stuff and be a general nuisance. I would beat on the window and they would skedaddle. After many days of this they learned to ignore me, they would even come to the window as if to sat "hi." I got ticked one night because they kept up their fussing. I opened the door and all but the skunk scampered off. He turned as if to spray so I hit him dead on with a size 13 Nike high top and knocked him across the porch. He recovered and sprayed my shoe. Man was the wife ticked off.

I used to do a lot of varmint hunting, headlighting at night. I had a blue heeler that was a treeing son of a gun. One night I see eyes and he takes off, hear him yelp and comes back to me drenched with a dead skunk in his mouth, but he was gagging pretty bad. Later than same night, come across another one and he jumps over the top of it but grabs it by the neck on the way over, brings live skunk to me before shaking the life out of it, needless to say, a dog slinging a partially live skunk is like a loose fire hose .... so I got hosed down pretty bad too. When I finally got back to the truck, my dad wouldn't let me ride in the cab, so I rode home in the bed with the dog. it was hovering around freezing ... but the worst part was when we got home, dad made me strip down to my underwear outside and he hosed me down with a garden hose.

PMK, that story is terrific. One of the best skunk stories ever.

Yes Sir, been there before. Our outside dog got sprayed on the 23rd of December. Of course we were doing Christmas Eve at our house. I tried everything you can find on google and his big butt still smelled. You can still smell it on him, fairly strong when he gets wet. A few months before he got sprayed we had one under our back deck. Moth balls got rid of him. I hate skunks!
