Okay knife makers, what about heat treating and tempering? Do you do your own? Do you send them out? What do you use to do your heat treating with and how do you check the hardness once done? I use a 240 Volt Evenheat KF 18 with a rampmaster controller for my heat treating. I have another oven that will only go up to 600° that I use for tempering. I check all of of my blades both after heat treat and after tempering with a Rockwell hardness tester. I have a lab certified standard that I verify it's accuracy with a couple of times a week.

I do my own. I also rockwell test each knife on my tester. I know a rockwell tester isnt the definitive answer on heat treat and will also run some coupons through and break them and make sure i dont have enlarged grain, and usually have a knife in each batch i will sharpen and abuse.

Heat treated in house. Proper heat treat is just as important as how the handle scales are (hopefully) mechanically attached to the heat treated tang.

Evenheat for me as well. I've also got a small kiln that I added digital control to that I use for folders. I have a tester as well, but haven't used it as much since I got my processes dialed in. I've got a gas forge also, and will occasionally use that for HT by eye, but not very often.
