Diaphragm calls work great but I also use a box call and a slate call for lots of different sounds. Puts and purrs and area easier on a box or slate call for me.

I think a diaphragm works the best. Slow down your cadence and less tongue pressure. accentuate the word "yelp". You can also do it with a pot call & striker by playing in the center of the call and making your strokes longer. Some box calls will have a lower tone on one side.

For me, a box call is easiest, but a diaphragm makes a better sound. My diaphragms don't seem to last long because I don't take care of them. I usually leave them in my hot truck and they deteriorate. They are cheap enough that I just buy a couple new ones every spring.

The box calls with 2 sides, Lynch World Champion is an old one but a good one, hen on one side Gobbler on the other. That said some hens sound a lot like gobblers on yelps, clucks and purrs. I also use a stryker box call quite a bit one of which is a deep tone and it works well mixed in with mouth call hen sounds. I use natural voice as much as calls and use the slate or aluminum pot calls as much or more than any others.

I prefer the diaphragm calls as well, especially when they are close and hand movements can blow the deal, also like having a good slate, one that has a good, true tone. Box calls are probably the easiest and what most start out with, work great if chalked and tone well, but like a slate, hard to use if you need convincing sound and the Tom is real close and hung up on something, if I could only take one tho, it would be a diaphragm.
