Previously, I have not been a fan of the notion that hogs have a breeding season. They can and do have piglets at any point during the year which means that they breed at any point during the year. However, last winter I noticed there seemed to be more pregnant sows than I had seen previously during the preceding months and I seem to be seeing this pattern again. On my last several hunts, of the sows killed, well more than half were obviously pregnant. Pig_Popper and I went out Friday night and got into a sounder. We recovered 8 hogs. 7 were sows. 6 were pregnant. 27 fetuses were tallied. Normally, had we shot the same group of hogs, I would have expected more like 1-3 to be pregnant.

So are y'all seeing this as well right now as well?

I haven't been able to get out much lately, but I did run up to my hunting spot on Groundhog day. I checked the game camera at a feeder there. One picture showed a couple of sows and (I think I counted correctly) 15 piglets!
On my few recent trips out (I stay away during deer hunting season) I had not noted piglets.

Several pregnant sows at our main place, and about a dozen piglets on the ground too

I killed 4 on my last trip to the lease. All 4 were huge with the biggest tipping the scale at 254 pounds. I figure I killed 30-40 hogs with 4 bullets. Pics of two of them. The one hanging from the hoist was 254.

Love your videos DNS
We see a lot of of pregnant sows not long after deer season when we are still fired up up about hunting.
I had a sow leave a litter right under a bush not far from a feeder. I only had a rifle and I got two of the little buggers from 15 feet, it was a choice time for a shot gun bang and I had a 22-250
Them little buggers are quick.

Maybe the sows are pushed closer to the boars during deer season by hunting activity.

Just like Jesus, sometimes you gotta kill some hogs.

Boars like bucks show up when they "smell" the season I think. Just my 2cents

Generally speaking, sows don't tolerate boars except when in heat, though it is an interesting thought. However, I don't think deer season does much to change the movement of hogs, particularly since the hogs are primarily nocturnal and deer hunting is a diurnal activity.

Just a wild guess … perhaps the proliferation of active deer feeders (corn & protein) give the sows a 'boost' in their fertility during deer season. I do think that the healthier (better nourished) the sows are the more fertile they become.

Again, just a guess.

Im just saying each year i feel like the amount of pregnant sows or ones that just had piglets go up around december and january. Im not saying I dont see sows pregnant during other times of year.

Maybe they all got bred this fall because they where healthy from the huge acorn crop this year and good rain fall.

Good Conditions=Good Time to breed

Feral Hog gestation period is around 115 days which would make sense for a lot of babies dropping in december-january. cowboy

Ah, that makes more sense. Winder didn't actually start until Dec 21st is why I was confused.

Yes, I think the presence of bountiful mast crops would be a significant contributor to this, sort of like for deer, only their gestation runs about twice as long. We should be seeing a lot of deer in the near future as well.
