Anybody use one on hogs? Daughter has a 7 mag and a 7-08 and she's not sure the 08 is big enough. I told her yes it is especially with the 140 Grain Barnes.

Maybe it’s the diminutive rifles they are chambered in or the way 7mm-08 sounds in your head but it’s not a weak round.

Although no magnum, it offeres pretty much .270 Winchester performance in a short action.

I’ve bought two and they are sure enough game killers.

No North American herbavore will withstand a well placed bullet from a 7mm-08.

She's got everything she needs to do serious hog damage. Bullet placement, bullet placement, bullet placement. Regardless of caliber, bullet placement comes first! Tell her to go out and collect herself some HOGS!

Agree with all that have said plenty for hogs, Have killed doubles several times with one that has a 18.5 inch barrel shooting 140gr partitions. Never ave shot but one hog or deer with mine that I have not watched it drop within 30 yards and most in much less than that. Of well over 100 eer/hogs with the 7mm-08 I have not loast any animal I have shot with it.

I've killed plenty of hogs and deer with a 7mm-08 with no problems. She won't be close to under-gunned with one.

7mm-08 is one of my favorite cartridges. It is plenty for hogs IF you maintain good shot placement. My Daughter has killed well over 50 hogs with hers and we have never lost one. I have lost count of the number I have taken with it.

Use a well constructed bullet and try to get a center of neck shot if it is presented.

I built a purpose specific (hogs) AR in .458 SOCOM in order to increase my shot opportunities with respect to shot angles (basically any angle except facing straight away). But the 7mm-08 is more than up to the task for any broadside shot and 'most' quartering shots (whether quartering to or from).

IMO the 7mm-08 is just about the perfect cartridge of Deer/Hogs/Antelope and other like sized game. Plenty of energy, flat shooting (inside of most hunting distances), mild recoil. Ammo is not on every store shelf...but is not hard to find.

I would still be using the 7mm-08 for hogs if I weren't so plagued with Feral Hogs. My sole purpose for hunting them is to control their numbers on my property...so I need to be able to shoot them from any angle, (or be faced with passing up shots). That is the only reason I went to the SOCOM.

But for your average hunter....the 7mm-08 would make an excellent choice.

a 7mm-08 should indeed be plenty of firepower.

Head shots are okay if the hog is close enough and standing still. Generally I prefer a middle of the neck shot or about 1/2 to 2/3 up the body on a line up from the front leg. It's a bigger target with more margin for error.

I could see this being a question if it were, "can I kill hogs with a 223" again. The 708 will definitely kill hogs if the hunter does her part. If it doesn't, it's the Indian, not the arrow.

I was thinking a 105mm Howitzer but I guess the little LM could work.

Thanks guys. I don't think she could handle the recoil of the 338 or the 105 so will stay with the 7mm-08.

It’s plenty, I kill several a year w a .17 hmr and .223

The best way for your daughter to find out if a 7mm-08 is big enough to handle hogs is for her to go out and shoot hogs with it.

Yep a 7-08 is enough gun. A 223 with partitions is more than enough gun.

My 7mm08 is my go to gun for deer and hogs.

Man I've killed them with .22s snipin or runnin them down. Inducing pain in them with small projectiles feels good sometimes. The bull barre lruger .22 auto pistolola is fun. Anything bigger is fine. Just be glad that they dont have magical healing powers like bucks.shot with centerfires. Hogs dont generally have that will to live.

7mm08 is a fine cartridge.

The 7-08 is not only big enough, IMO it’s as good as it gets for hogs. I have used 140 grain Accubonds and 139 Hornady spire points and have not had a bullet fail to exit. I think you’ll find it to be a wonderful round for hogs.
