Folks - I have some very basic questions about leasing hunting land in Texas. All general advice is appreciated.

My family is new to Texas. We recently moved down to Comal County, TX from WI, and myself and my twin 16 year olds boys wish to learn hog hunting as a family activity.

After doing a lot of reading, it seems the most common arrangement in TX is to lease hunting land. Does this hold true for folks just wanting to hunt hog? It seems most of the value in annual leases is tied into the value of hunting deer, not hogs. If that’s true, a typical annual lease doesn’t seem to make sense for us at this time. Are there any landowners which will craft annual leases around just hog or varmints outside of deer season? It would be nice to have a familiar place to go where we could get to know the owner and have a good cooperative relationship rather than bounce around from place-to-place.

What would most people do in my situation?

Most leases are deer and you can hunt other game if available on the lease as an added bonus. You will have a hard time finding a hog only lease. You will find day hunt places all over the state, but again they are usually 2-3 days for a set price.

Get a deer lease that has hogs, problem solved. Good luck.

Thanks. I suspected this might be the case, but it’s good to get confirmation. I’ll start reading through other theads to educate myself on annual leases.

Farmers would be the first place I would look. You would be hunting mainly farmland with minimal cover or land that is close to bottomland/thicker cover. Corn, milo, cotton, etc farmers would be my first choice. You would not need to bait or have permanent blinds. I would go to the local feed store/fertilizer company and put up your info on a bulletin board or where ever they will let you post it on what you are looking for. State that you are willing to pay for a lease. Not ever piece of land in Texas has deer but hogs seem to be everywhere there is crop land.

Finding a pig only lease will be difficult. As was said, a deer lease with pig hunting as a bonus is the norm. Can always go on day hunt or package deal.

I suggest finding someone who has a deer lease, and see if they can invite you hog hunting. It takes time, but if you can build some contacts of other hunters, it can lead to opportunities. Some leases do not allow any guests during deer season, but do so in the off season. If you are invited to hog hunt, it would be appreciated if you offer to buy some corn for the feeders, or help with lease projects.

This is the road I would go down.....but realize if I'm the landowner I need to be confident you are safe and know what your doing. Not worth the liability if you don't eliminate or curtail my hog problem without wounding livestock or sending bullets flying toward my neighbors. So have a game plan to proactively address these concerns when you approach the landowner.

This is the reasons ranchers and farmers don't look at it as a "favor" hunting hogs on their land. Especially when it comes to sounders of hogs. Hunters can start letting loose with bullets flying all directions.

Thanks, this helps me understand my options. In my former home of WI, it was different as we had huge tracts of public land, but the same when it comes to private land. If I owned a farm or ranch, I’d be awfully particular about who I’d let roam around with a gun too. If I do manage to find a farmer who will entertain the idea of us doing some hog hunting on a lease, I’ll be sure to bring my boys. They are polite kids and very experienced with firearms, so that may help my case.
