Hey stompy, do you still plant seed or just turn the soil over and hope there’s enough residual seed to grow again?

Just turn the dirt, lots of seeds from years and years of growing sunflowers. A sunflower seed can be dormant for many decades until it's pulled up closer to the surface. One thing you have to do is turn the ground before the last freeze so the seed cracks. I like to get several freezes on them, that's why I turn in January.

^^^ Good info. In your neck of the woods, how many acres of sunflower does it take to keep doves around? I know it is all about supply and demand, but was wondering what the minimum effort should be in your opinion.

Really don't know the minimum acres, I now some guys that have some smaller 10-15 acre fields that holds birds, just doesn't take long to shoot them out of there.

The late Bob Turner (Turner Seed) would give you a big thumbs up. No seed needed, plow in January and hope for rain at right time.

By turning do you mean basically plowing the field? Yes, some years I disc the fields but this year I chiseled and went over them with a spike tooth harrow. I run the chisel about every third year to break up the hardpan from discing.
