I hunt in Cass County and have just been informed by my landowner that he is having all the timber on our 135 acres harvested, starting in a couple weeks. I take that to mean there will literally be no timber left on our place, just piles of the worthless stuff. So, we will be going from extremely thick mix of pine and hardwood to open pasture. The farms around us do have plenty of cover and get hunted fairly hard. What should I expect next season? Other than 6 foot tall briar bushes, lol. Also, this is typical east Texas...several good bucks on camera at night almost daily but never any daylight sightings.

Hard to say without seeing the property. How is the hunting now? Is there a creek, or water source? The brush grows quick, and may provide some cover. Have you considered a foot plot? Is the LO willing to reduce the price for a year, and see how this goes? If you don't stay on the lease, it may be hard for him to lease it, especially the first year after the cut.

There will likely be much more desirable food available for deer. If the briar bushes provide enough cover, you will have more deer.

The first time some family woods were harvested for desirable hardwoods, the whole place was a mess. Looked awful. But...more low level growth came in and the deer population actually improved.

Hunting has been pitiful. We have been on this place for 3 seasons and have yet to kill a deer. 3 of us hunt and I am the only one to have seen a decent buck in a hunting situation and he was just right at the tips of the ears and not sure he would make AR. Killed a few hogs and we have lots of deer on camera but they just don't show themselves. The place is very thick though and my gut tells me the deer are there we just can't see them and they don't have much need to move around much. We have several streams on the place, a small pond and several low spots that, this year, have held water all season long. We have been hunting ladder stands with a few winch feeders hung in big trees. I'm guessing next season we will need elevated box blinds with tripod feeders and pens around them. Not worried about lease cost....it is very minimal due to it being owned by a family friend.

With LO permission, a couple of food plots. I've hunted some cut-overs before in other states, the growth that comes back is prime deer feed. The question is going to be whether or not the brush grows enough to give them cover.

I'd put in a food plot if the land owner permits. He might since he made the land less interesting and probably wants to keep you happy.

My feeders are all located against tree lines in pastures next to several acre food plots. Seems deer are attracted to the feeder, but lose interest quickly and go to the oats.

I've hunted for 25 years, but only hunted the last 4 years near food plots. It's really amazing how well food plots work. I knew they were supposed to work well, but damn... they really attract the deer.

On the property I hunted before I got my own... the rancher put in a food plot each year. I'd rarely see deer at the feeder, but always saw them in the food plot. The blind was situated to shoot at the feeder so several deer that were harvested ended up being a stalk and shoot. The deer on that property largely ignored the feeder near the food plot.

I hunted at a buddies aunt's place last year up in Arkansas that had selective cutting going on during deer season. This is an 800 acre place and not everywhere was being cut on, it pushed majority of the deer out, we had a hard time finding deer. Now this year he said the deer population spiked back up since the cutting had ceased, every hunt they saw ample amount of deer.

Great info. I hope the timber company cleans the place up enough to where we can drive our hunting buggy around and till up a few areas for food plots. Thus far we have not had more than a 20' x 20' clear area on the entire place for a plot so it was not an option. I'm talking this place is thick. Maybe this upcoming year will be our year. Although, I am currently trying to find something west of Dallas to hunt.....you can only spend so many 3 day weekends with your kids in east Texas and see nothing but squirrels, lol.

Sounds like this may turn out to be an improvement. Since you mentioned the price is low, maybe you could keep this, and still look elsewhere.

I don't know buddy. Sounds like a bad deal even before the clearing if no deer have been shot or seen in three years.

Personally I think you could do better in the Angelina or Davy Crockett and probably much cheaper 2cents

As a forester and deer hunter, it doesn't sound like it could get much worse. After the job is over there will be multiple areas in the skid roads to seed in without much effort. Maybe our company bought the timber. We are located in Linden.
