 Homemade trailer Question (Axel)

So out of my "brilliance", as my wife calls it, I picked up a homemade trailer off a guy that was looking to see it for $300. From the pictures, I can tell it needed work but like most of my projects, I drastically misjudge the amount of work. So long story short I paid the guy, limped it home and now have "another project" to work on.
What I have figured out is the guy took a mobile home axel, cut it in half and then welded some angle iron to the axel to hold it in place. It works, but not ideally as safe as I would like it. My plan is to replace the axel, but the issue I am running into is the hub face on a mobile home axel is different than on a regular utility trailer axel. Does anybody have an idea on how to measure this correctly and get the correct sized axel? There is no flange but I am able to take that measurement, and from some high tech Googling, I can see to add 6 inches for a 3,500-pound axel which I don't believe this one it.

Find a trailer manufacture, talk to them& see what they recommend. If no manufactures in your area, NE Texas has dozens. Big Tex is one of the biggest and have helped me with needed information in the past. Kelvey Steel in Mt. Pleasant has a very large selection of trailer axles and can probably help you.

You can probably get there faster (and cheaper in the long run) using real utility trailer parts vs mobile home parts.... Northern Tool listing

pass it on to someone else for what you bought it for and keep shopping.
I have an old trailer with mobile home axle/wheels on it. Its annoying.

Also would have to be set right on the frame. If not at the right angle it will never pull straight not to mention wear out tires like crazy.

You also need to be sure it puts enough tounge weight on the hitch or it will be all over the road.
