How far did you have to drive? How long did you get to hunt?

Thats a good program that Kansas runs. Getting farther away from larger towns, especially if you go later in the season, seems to be the deal. If you can find a piece or two thats kind of isolated, those dont get hit as hard either

Very nice.
Sure would like to breed Bleu to that Tri of yours.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

Looks like a hell of a good time. Any recommendations on scouting from afar other than picking up a WIHA atlas?
In dog beers, I've only had one.

There weren’t any birds next to the roads. We had to walk over 2 miles into the walk in hunting before we found anything that would hold. I haven’t ever walked that many miles in three days. The birds were a long way from the cold beer. It’s not a hunt for an old man.

Awesome hunt, love a mixed back WIHA hunt. How many in your group? Did any roosters hold or just the bobs? I just run a flushing dog and hunt WIHA a few times a year. Very rarely will she get one up that is holding. Most of the time I get lucky on runners with me sprinting behind the dog when she is on good scent.

Three of us went up together and we met another guy who hunted with us. We had three pheasant points, but the quail up there had a death wish. They weren’t like the quail down here. They would hold until you stepped on them and then fly and die.

Scale - I agree with you on the quail holding much tighter, you don't get the "up your boot laces" covey rises in the rolling plains anymore like you do up there. I can remember in the mid-90s, through a work connection I got access to hunt a lot of acreage in Northern Ok (most of it bordered KS) around Ada. The first time I went up there, I kind of accused our host of putting out pen raised birds, because they held so tight and flew about 25% slower than Rolling Plains birds back then, made you shoot like a skeet champion. Where I grew up hunting quail east of Dallas, the birds were more like that when they were plentiful then got more crazy arsed as the population started to dwindle in the early 80s. All three of those areas had plentiful coyotes, not sure what drives the regional differences but I think it also has something to do with covey sizes and the number of juveniles in a covey -- some of the Rolling Plain coveys were holding super tight a couple of years ago during the boom
