I shot a deer and hog this year and they both went down within my line of site. It both instances, cows circled around them and started licking them. With the deer the cows actually got very amped up. They were butting each other and mooing like crazy. The next morning the cows came back to where the deer had died and were licking and digging at the ground with their hooves, and again mooing like crazy. One heifer in particular was going bat S crazy mooning and other cows came running in from hundreds of yards away. Maybe one you cattle people can tell my why cattle behave this way.

I think they act that way if a new born calf dies also. Maybe to keep the coyotes and such away.

They do that when they smell blood. We always cut the bulls out into separate pens when we were dehorning cattle or cutting calves because they can get really worked up and want to fight. Whitetail bucks can do act up during the rut when they come across a dead buck or two bucks locked up from a fight. The bucks locked up may not be dead but will be when the other buck(s) get done with them. I have photos of a buck I had just killed this year getting stuck and rolled all over the place by a much larger buck.

Cattle do stupid [censored]. End of story. What he said. I've had them stand around a dead hog (walked up to him after the shot) on several occasions and just stare for hours like they are trying to will their cloven bud to rise.

Cattle do stupid [censored]. End of story. I'd go with this. Been several years now since I have hunted amongst livestock but I once shot a buck amongst cattle, my bullet went over the back of one of the cows between me and the deer (hunting elevated tower stands) and the cows all ran like hell at the shot. Other instances on the same property they barely even looked.
It's hell eatin em live

I lost a nice buck this way. I hunted a long pipeline right-a-way and the cattle were feeding about 80 yards behind this buck. When the buck went to walk off I waited until his nose was in the trees prior to pulling the trigger, making certain he cleared the cattle behind him. When he dropped, the cows stampeded toward him and actually one looked like she was trying to stomp on him. At that point he threw his head up a couple of times (under normal circumstances he would have gotten an immediate follow up shot) but was surrounded by the cows. After they finally lost interest and walked off, 20 minutes or so, my son and I climbed down out of the stand. Once at the base my 8 year old boy said, Dad your deer is gone. I looked for days for this buck and never could recover him. Absolutely the craziest thing I have seen between deer and cows interacting.
