Going to look at a place in Turkey. Has a few miles of river frontage and hasn’t been hunted in several years. Does anyone have any experience in this area? How are the numbers? WT to Muley ratio? Thanks!

Hunted Caprock Canyon a couple years ago for mulies. Saw quite a few of both species. Driving all around the area surrounding Turkey we saw lots more mule deer than whitetail. We heard from the locals that the hunting is very good for both.

Whitetails low and mulies up high typically.. The whole ranch hasn't been hunted? Quality depends on hunting pressure there. Locals sit with 12 pack and glass for days there for a muley in the wheat. We shot our first pig ever on the river there. Used to quail all along there. Definitely good deer around.

The terrain dictates the WT /MD ratio. If you have mesquite flats bordering draws the WT will be there. The MD will be in the cedar breaks and wheat fields if you have them. WT around the river as well.

I hunt East of there in Motley County. The drought{s} had a major impact on deer populations in that region. Based on our observations over three years there are very few bucks 5 or older. This year we saw a few 4 year olds and had considerably more promising 3 year olds than last year. We are optimistic that with favorable weather conditions the next few years can produce some good deer. We have around 50-50 mule deer to wt., with the wt increasing. Wheat in that area is a definite attractant for deer.

If i get it we will be planting 4-5 wheat fields. They said the place has a few open areas for planting. I am going to look at it superbowl weekend.

My Son and I hunted a 28k acre ranch west of Estelline a few years ago. We drove all day, ate lunch on the tailgate of the truck. Saw lots of mulies and we each killed a good buck. His is on my wall as I type this. We saw a monster at a windmill, problem was, he was 'carrying the mail'. Great country. Good luck.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it. Don't text and drive.
