My son was selected, through the TYHP from TP&W, to participate in a youth hunt this past October but it was rained out with the hopes of being rescheduled. We received notice that it has been rescheduled for this coming weekend and it will be his first ever deer hunt. He has sat with me in the stand for hogs, but never with his own rifle and he has never had the opportunity to get a deer. I think I am more excited than he is and I'm barely able to get any work done at the office because my mind keeps fast forwarding to this weekend with images of smiles and father-son time. Its supposed to be a cold one with rain, but I've been through the mental check-off list more times than I can count and I know that we are prepared for it. I really have nothing else to contribute to this post, I'm just super excited for my son and I hope to be posting pictures this weekend of him with his first deer.

On a side note, thanks to everybody on this site who suggested the TYHP early last year. It has been a great resource and it's awesome to know that the state of Texas is assisting youth being introduced to hunting.

When my boys were of that age we did several TYHP hunts on high fence ranches. It was a full 2.5 days at the ranches. One ranch we hunted they had to take 80 does off. My boys shot 3 does and 2 spikes lots of memories and good times.
Have fun share pics!

Great program, Jerry and Kiki did well starting an growing it. I have helped run 6 hunts and will say they were very rewarding to the youth and all that attended.

Best of luck to you and you son on this hunt, may great lifetime memories bemade

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments.

We will be in Bedias, Texas, roughly halfway between Huntsville and College Station. My understanding is that it will be pretty cold and possibly wet...PERFECT for a kids first hunting experience. A little misery before a great moment makes the great moments that much better.

Make sure you keep up with his ammo. He gets one bullet from you and if another is needed you provide the next bullet. You might be nervous so keep a bullet in each pocket so you find one anywhere you reach for it.

Good luck and have fun

Good luck and try and keep warm. TYHP is a great program and from my experience they put the kids in areas that are target rich. I have some great memories going with my son on those hunts.
