Say you wanted to throw at least a 120gr bullet, with a sectional density of at least .25, starting out fast enough to still go at least 2600fps at 150 yards, and do it from a 16" barrel, which cartridge would you choose?

I'm getting 2730 at the muzzle from my 16" 6.5 Creedmoor and factory Superformance 129 SST. They're only moving 2400 at 150 yards. The problem you're going to have with the light bullets is low BC. You cant run them fast enough in such a short barrel to overcome the low BC at distance. I'll run the numbers with a 308 and see if it's an option but I think your expectations are high. Also, if you're shooting a gas gun, the velocities will be even lower.
Haha yea I polished that thing for hours.

Well, the 308 won't meet your demands. Even a 6.5 Creedmoor running 130 Hybrids would need 2900 FPS MV to do what you're asking. Maybe someone else can come up with a magic combination but I think you're going to have to be flexible with either your barrel length or your expectations. I just ran the numbers for a 7mm with 162 ELD and you'd still need 2900 to get to your goal. It'll never happen in a barrel that short unless you get a magnum and experiment with faster than normal powders.

I agree with the statement above, that is going to be very hard to find, actually very lofty goals. Why 2600fps?

ELD-X 2640 fps MV 150 gr. ELD-X 2700 fps MV Speeds confirmed out to 800 yards. They might not be 2600 fps at 150 yards, but the multitude of animals hit as far as 300 yards died anyway.

My 16.25" 6.5 CM has killed axis out to 350ish and hogs nearing 500 yards with 120 grain A-Max. MV of 2750.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

2600 fps because it seems to be the approximate number for DRT with in tight heart lung shots.

2600 fps because it seems to be the approximate number for DRT with in tight heart lung shots. Lol tell that to all the hogs I’ve smacked with my 300BLK out of an 8” barrel running at around 2000FPS. Most were all DRT.

A lot on bangflop lung shots is how full of air the lungs are when hit. I have seen it at 100 yards from a 30-30 and have watched a buck run off for almost 100 yards after a lung shot from a 7mmSTW with an impact velocity of about 3200fps.
The only sure bang flop drt shots that guarantee it are CNS shots. Velocity helps but is not the end all answer.

I think the answer is powder blends and short fat cartridges, which would have to come from a manufacturer. Perhaps if we get access to suppressors without tax stamp rigamarole these things will happen.

So I’m about to pull the trigger to rebarrel to either a 16.5” 308 or a 7mm-08. I like the availability and popularity of the 308 but I think the 7mm-08 has an advantage. This gun will be suppressed. I currently run it with a 16.5” 308 lite barrel. I’ll be going to a heavier barrel in either caliber. Any recommendations?

More than any caliber. One .308, in a gas gun, and it may well get a new barrel in 7mm-08. The right hand load, and it will be excellent in bolt action or AR, even with a 16" barrel.

I think the answer is powder blends and short fat cartridges, which would have to come from a manufacturer. Perhaps if we get access to suppressors without tax stamp rigamarole these things will happen. You don't need powder blends to achieve what you want. It's just going to come with muzzle blast that will be eliminated with your suppresor. 264 win mag would probably be good candidate on the low side. 300 win will do it, if your suppressor is rated for it.

You might get there with 168 im the 300. You might look into the 338s.

I no longer have quickload but you can get good predictions of loads in different barrel lengths
