Okay I need some information. Why do deer managers (MLD lands) stop shooting does because they are pregnant ? Talked with a landowner recently and was told he still had 36 doe tags but would cease to shoot does later this month, when asked why, he said didn't want to shoot does with fetuses in them. I was involved with a MLD ranch for about 10 years and the ranch manager shot does till he didn't have tags left. I thought the reason for MLD was to manage the population. Can anyone tell me why ranch managers cease to manage if the does are pregnant? I can't understand their reasoning. Thanks

Fetus is there when she is breed. They with qualms about shooting does this late just do not want to see and think about the little ones.

Because the ranch manager is not using the MLD tags correctly... You kill a doe before or after being bred results in the same result. If you don't shoot what you are supposed to, you are not managing # of mouths.

It is kinda a creep show to see that thing fall out. I always wonder if it’s too much for kids.

I’ve killed a doe pregnant with twins but killed lots of hogs that were pregnant. It doesn’t bother me at this point. If you don’t shoot the does you are suppose to then you end up with more does and more mouths to feed once they give birth.

We don't see a lot of deer (near Clay/Archer county line) so when I see fetuses in a doe, I know that's fewer that we could've seen next year and the following couple of years. I prefer to shoot does early in the season to try to avoid this but most of the guys I hunt with are horn hunting until the last couple of weeks.

My wife shot a doe on Sunday that had triplets. Just comes with the territory this late in the year.

Maybe he is only on MLD so he can shoot a rifle during bow season and really doesn't care about management.

These does would not have been bred. So, my question is this, what does it matter when you kill them? If they are killed before or after they are bred, no fawns are dropped. We have been hunting MLD since 1988, the biologist gives out permits to keep the herds balanced. We attempt to fill each and every permit regardless of what part of the season it is. Our hunting is 100% better now than it was in 1988. Much better buck/doe ratio and bigger better bucks, heck even the does are bigger. I believe it's a mistake to not try and use all those tags.

on our place we try to kill our does early so the bucks have an easier time working fewer numbers of does. Besides, if you are MLD and quit hunting for a couple of weeks when regular season is over, the deer drop their guard a little and you can have some good success with getting your buck in middle February.

I agree. The biologist didn't just pull a number out of his arse. Use the tags and take the prescribed numbers. All MLD owners I've dealt with that followed the plans closely have had the same results as you-bigger, healthier deer of both sexes. I did feel a little remorseful because I don't know which of those eight fawns might have been something in 5-6 years, but a mouth is a mouth either in September or January.

Kill does early otherwise you could be killing off the best genetics your place has to offer with them unborn fawns.

What if the doe that you shot early in the season was the doe that was giving birth to monster bucks through her genetics? Wouldn't you be doing the same thing? I'd be willing to bet that pretty much all if not almost all does will be pregnant. So what does it really matter if you kill her on October vs. killing her in Jan?

Just my opinion, but with native genetics its 100% gamble what those fawns are going to come out like no matter if they were bread by a 150 inch 8 pt a 180 inch 12 pt or a spike buck. Shooting does keeps the numbers where you want/need them and the native genetics is going to produce what it is going to produce regardless of when you shoot your does. Also you will never know what doe was bread by the last or next up and coming super buck from the area.

Agreed. It's a complete gamble. I read an interesting study where even does who bred with smaller antlered bucks had produced nice bucks. Does carry genes too. If you had a doe that was born from a monster buck and that doe mated with a smaller antlered buck... there is a chance the offspring will still turn into a nice buck. That nice buck might mate with a doe that was an offspring of another nice buck... and that buck might turn into a monster. I used to cull young spikes in the past, but now I leave them be. If their antlers aren't so nice looking at 3.5 or 4.5 years... then I'll take them. Reminds me of the results from my Ancestry DNA test. My mother got it for her siblings as well as me for Christmas several years ago. My maternal grand father is Italian and maternal grandmother is mostly Italian. My father has no Italian in him. One of my mother's siblings (my aunt), by chance, got passed less Italian related DNA than I did... which is fun to give her crap about since she enjoys her Italian heritage more than I do.
