Like many on here, I'm married with children. I always seem to be the last one in the shower in the evening, or morning, and it almost never fails that I run out of hot water. I'm tired of running out of hot water. I've decided to go with an all electric, tankless water heater(no gas at our residence). Many reviews I have read thus far have touted the systems ability to save on the electric bill due to "during use only" electricity usage, but to be honest I could care less, I just want my damn hot water! I'm excited beyond belief and cant wait. I might even install a second shower head in the shower just to enjoy the hot water that much more.
Do any of you make use of the tankless water heater setups? What are your experiences with them?

I am following this. Several years ago I advised not to do the tankless electric by a builder during a remodel.

Man, this has been cussed and discussed, so I’ll just sit over here and observe. As for the second shower head, I had one installed in our shower when we lived in Houston. I loved it, since hot water could blast my sore lower back. I had to install a push button on/off valve on it eventually. The blast of hot water wasn’t hitting my short wife where she wanted to be blasted.

I wanted one put in my house and I have a friend who is a plumber. He said they are great with gas, but he would not install an electric one because I would not be happy. That was 5 years ago. Maybe they have improved the electric ones since then.

From what I have read, electric ones have come up in quality a lot over the past few years, but like most anything you get what you pay for.

We have a gas (propane) tankless water heater and love it. It’s set to 135 degrees and sends chills all over your body when you step into the shower. Endless supply of hot water. Don’t make the mistake a lot of people do and assume that it I instant, it is not, it takes just as for the hot water to reach its destination as a typical tank heater. We put a propane in this new house just so we could have a tankless heater, and run 2 shower heads in the master shower. If you have never experienced a large 160 jet rain shower head, you’re missing out

put one in our cabin a couple of years ago -- electric. Have to use a very restricted shower head. Otherwise it can't keep up. Not a fan, but it is a small one.

I had two all electric units in my last home, both were Stiebel Eltron 36 Plus Tempra units. I lived there 6 years and they performed as advertised, BUT.........make sure you circulate white vinegar through them at least twice per year. You can do it yourself with a simple, small sub pump and 5 gallon bucket. It makes all the difference in the world in the efficiency of these units and doesn't allow scale, etc to buikld up inside the heat tubes.
I currently have two nat gas units in my home now, both Rinnai units and the same maintenance applies. I love the tankless units and would hate to go back to the 80 gal units I had previously. Good luck.

I would suggest up sizing your current electric tank water heater if possible. I have a 60 gallon never ran out of hot water even with 6 people running through our 2 showers. dish washer/washing machine don't bother it. My whole electric bill ranges from about $60-$150 a month depending on the time of year, tank water heaters aren't that bad.

Do any of you make use of the tankless water heater setups? What are your experiences with them? Any possibility of going propane? I'm currently running 4 propane units and have been for 8 yrs. I did have to have one rebuilt last yr. When I had mine installed, my supplier strongly advised against electric, but as others have said, they may have become more cost efficient over the yrs.

Have had both. Electric one sucked in a 2 bath senario. Seems like it had 3 or 4, 40 amp breakers running it. . Have a Large Navien tankless running on Propane now in 3 bath. it's a butt kicker.

Our resident plumber, Red Ranger, will probably chime in. I believe he is totally against the electric ones and doesn’t really like the gas ones anyway. He recommends a recirculating pump.
I just turned it on . I was looking bird dogs in the butt this morning.

I had one installed in our barndo and couldn't be happier. Based on space, we were going to go with a 30ish gallon traditional water heater. Instead went tankless to further save space and it works as advertised. Electric unit and I think it works better for us since we are not there daily - I am not heating and maintaining water when not in use. Also, I like HOT showers, so I have it sat high and have NEVER run out of hot water.
Will add, from what I see, if you have really high water pressure it is harder for the units to keep up. And if your pressure is too low, they simply will not cycle on - probably a safety measure as the water temp could get dangerous. Like Goldilocks says, the water pressure at my place...is just right.
We have mini-split AC and the tankless water heater and my electric bill is surprising low - even when considering the amount of time we are at the ranch.

I've converted (2) homes from gas tanks to gas tankless. If the current home's tanks go, I'll probably just go back with tanks. Yes it is endless hot water, but I guess I can't self consume more than 60 gallons of hot water. Just didn't see that big of a difference... plus I don't have to do even the minimal maintenance req'd of a tankless.

I'm looking at building a new place, and one of the contractors I talked to said he won't do electric tankless any more. Too many people that are unhappy with them, for the same reasons listed above, they have a hard time keeping up and they're gigantic power hogs . So I'm going with propane, just to run the water heater and the stove. I've got a natural gas unit in the house I'm in now, and won't go without one again.

Does your breaker box have the extra capacity for one?
coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. I don't give eeffoc until I have my morning coffee.

Does your breaker box have the extra capacity for one? Thats the problem im running into now. We might have to upgrade to a higher amperage panel, or at the least do a sub panel install.

Ive only used a tankless electric 1 time at a wedding venue for one of my cousins weddings. Water was cold for a sec then would burn the skin off your hand for a sec, then was luke warm.

A high enough wattage electric tankless would likely mean upgrading your entire service panel, and possibly the meter run itself. Very $$$$
Install the highest wattage tank-less, that your electrician say you can get away with without spending the big bucks. Install that upstream of your existing water heater, then turn the temp up higher on the tank water heater.
Higher temp means that each shower will use fewer gallons of hot water from the tank. The tank-less upstream of the tank-type water heater will dramatically improve the recovery time of your existing heater.
Send me a check for the $3500 you will save by not upgrading your service entrance and meter loop.
We all need to practice Whoa more.
