Spent a few days in Okieland for our annual trip and brought home a bird for the wall. Not the greatest of pics, but here you go. Waiting on some input from local biologists for a final say, but I can see either A) Hermaphrodite B) Very Old Hen C) MallardxBlack Hybrid. I feel more confident in one of the first two I have listed, what say you? [Linked Image]

Just an immature Mallard drake. Shot a bunch in Canada last year that looked just like it.

Yup
Regular old mallard drake. Not yet colored up from summer "eclipse plumage". Early October in the prairie pothole region most of them look like that. They are referred to as "dirty drakes" in local vernacular. Not shooting hens at that time is challenging. The only dead give away it's a drake may be the olive bill. By early November, most drakes have their full fall plumage. Some birds are still not fully colored up when they migrate. Mallards molt twice a year. Drakes lose their colorful fall plumage shortly after breeding season. It is replaced with the dull eclipse plumage that they wear through the summer. They molt a second time in the fall when they color up in preparation for the breeding season. Young of the year drakes, hatched late, will usually be the last to color up in the fall or early winter.

Edit to add: FWIW I hope I'm wrong and it proves to be a hybrid. January is awful late for a drake to not be fully colored up.

That’s a hen. Running out of estrogen! Look at the bill. I’ve seen a couple over the years. She probably has had some hen feathers showing through on her back and belly. Shot one a few years ago that came in quacking like crazy. The bill is what gives them away.

As I stated in my original post, I do agree with this the most. There are very apparent hen traits in the bill color and markings, and speckled belly and back feathers.
