I was wondering, if I spread some Red or White Clover seeds over the top of my food plots that are planted in a mix of Bob Oats, Eldorado Wheat, Elbon Rye, Austrian Winter Peas and cultipack them in, if I would get good germination this time of year? Between the deer and hogs, the plots are browsed pretty close to the ground. My goal is to have a good stand of clover for spring into early summer.

If you get some rain and have a week of fairly warm days yes. They will likely come up all through spring rather than most at one time. Young plants will die with a good freeze.

You need to do a little google work on the cultivars you want, or call your local county AG agent, some clovers need fall planting (Septemberish) and some need spring planting. Get the right one that works in your area and you may get some going. Your soil will make a difference and get pre inoculated seed if you can, or if not buy it separate and treat the seed just before you plant.

I don’t know where you are but in NE Texas white clover doesn’t do to well. It’s red clover up there.

Thanks for the responses! I am in North Tx (Montague County). I've used Red Clover in the past and had pretty good results.

I am in Montague so let me know what works! We have 2000 lbs of lime ready we couldn't use this year due to the rain.

Look into Arrowleaf clover too, most recommended for much of Texas where clover can grow, (somewhat drought tolerant) and was the cultivar one biologist recommended in deer plot mixes in E Texas. One good thing about it is it is a great re-seeder as well.

I should have planted rice as my food plots have been under water most of the season.

I’m converting my wheat field into native grass this spring in Foard County. My NRCS agent recommended Yellow Blossom and Purple Prairie Clover be added to the seed mix. She said that they both grow well in dry land areas. They are biannuals and will look like they are taking over the field one year but absent the next.
