Hornady XTP HP 240gr 23gr 296 in old Marlin 1894, clipped top of front shoulder and broke the back bone, no meat loss but maybe half inch around wound channel. Two neck shots last year with same results, wished I would have used this instead of 30-06 years ago. All 3 DRT. Makes butchering alot nicer.

Have been using the 44 Mag for years, there is something about a slow big bullet that works and like has been said for years eat right up to the hole. In one rifle I got better accuracy with the 300gr XTP so use it a lot. that was a Ruger 44 carbine.

I've got three; Marlin 1894P, Rossi 92, and Winchester Timber Scout. I shoot a heavy, flat nose, cast bullets (250, 275, or 300 grains), they great hunting rifles. All are configured as scout rifles.

I am down to 4 44 mags now
H&R singleshot which is legal for primitive weapon season in Mississippi Remington 788 Custom boltaction with a full length stock S&W 629 hunter package
All are coped though 2 have QD mounts and sights are ready if called on to use.
the 788 is the most accurate 44 Mag I have ever shot

They get the job done. I hit this one in the shoulder and it split down the middle.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

Nice job TC!
The 788 is the holy grail of 44 rifles, glad to hear you have one kmon1.
I had a walnut stocked Ruger 77/44, I really wanted that rifle, but as it ended up, couldn't get rid of it fast enough. It was a horrible rifle.

RD I have only seen 2 of the 788s in 44 Mag. One was in a pawn shop in Plano years ago and was not for sale. This one I ran into at a gun show in Cisco, Texas. Went to the range that afternoon and sighed it in then walked around the lease and there was an unlucky hog at the feeder.
Bought a 788 in 30-30 a few years ago off Gunbroker so that and the 7mm-08 gives me the 3 calibers in the 788 with the lowest numbers made.
the little custom mentioned above weighs all of 6.6lbs including scope, sling and mag. handy as all get out and accurate enough for a 44 1.5 inch groups at 100 will work fine for a 44.

I love shooting stuff with a .44 mag. Mine is a 12” T/C Encore pistol. Have taken several whitetail with it, and the sound the bullet makes when it hits is unique. Haven’t had a deer go more than a few steps after impact. Most drop on the spot.
