I am thinking it would be one of the FMJ flat noses. Forced to use a rimfire round. Rifle will be a suppressed Ruger All American scoped with a red light. Hunting a specific hog on another HOA property.

I used CCI Maximag 40 grain JHP once on a little one, maybe 25LBS. Hit right in the middle of the neck at 70 yards. It ran 10 yards, kicked for a while, then turned into schnitzel. I quit using it because mines not semi-auto and I want quantity not quality.

Just curious since you mention HOA. Are you hunting around houses and the belief is a rimfire is safer than centerfire, which I kind of get. Wouldn't a rifled slug shotgun or subsonic centerfire be better? Yes .22 in the ear will drop one, just curious on the HOA thing.

Thanks.

I have killed many many hogs with a 22 cal pellet gun. I trapped for a few years and that is what I used when someone came to get a hog. The only place it was effective was facing you....between the eyes and up about 4 inches. Anything else was no good. I know you are talking about a 22 mag but shot placement with that small cal is very important.

Yes shooting nuisance hogs on a dead end road among houses. I will be shooting at a pile of dog food in the safest place possible from scaffolding. And yes I will be making a CNS hit depending on angle. This particular hog has tried to get into houses through doggy doors, has chased people, has hurt dogs. I even piled up bags of topsoil behind the kill zone. I haven't seen the hog yet but the neighbors all say he is huge which depending on who you ask can be anywhere from 150 pounds up.

This would seem to be an ideal scenario for a baited trap. You could still use your .22 magnum at point blank range

I"m confident that a .22M behind the ear will resolve your problem nicely. I wouldn't go with either a fmj or an hp myself, but it's your call. As they say, measure twice and cut (shoot) once.

Had the same problem in a neighbourhood I lived in before we moved to the ranch. Baited trap is only way to go. I caught the bad boy on 2nd night. 237lb boar. I set the trap in an area I could back a trailer up to. Loaded the trap and hog onto the trailer with a little help. I converted him to a hundred dollar bill.

I am going to set a trap out but apparently the whole neighborhood has been trying their hand at hog trapping/educating hogs not to go into traps. Soon as it drys out a bit I guess I will be out there waiting for the evil yard destroying black and white hog. Personally I think rich people are hard to work for but someone has to do it.

Federal Premium Game-Shok .22 WMR JHP Rimfire Ammunition 50grain - I have been using this in my kel-tec cmr30 and it works just fine on pigs with a CNS shot

Shot placement will far outweigh what bullet you choose to shoot them with.

Would be cool to shoot a hog in the middle of a field in the vitals with it. I watched our old land owner shoot a 200+ pound boar in the lungs with a 22 mag, it ran a ways but dropped within sight. Persoanlly I would be looking for a head shot and very picky about the angle.

Tested some ammo. The CCI TMJ 40 grain bullet shoots really well, under an inch for 3 at 100 yards. The 40 gr. JHP from Winchester not so well 1 3/8 but still useful for most shooting. Last a friend gave me a box of the CCI 30 gr. VMax loading. This shot just as well as the TMJ load but impacted 3 inches higher. The Winchester load hit around 1 inch lower than the TMJ round. This seems to be pretty good shooting for a 22 magnum rimfire. Hauling the scaffolding down today but can't hunt till next week.

Do you intend to shoot them from 100?

I had a place that would allow me to shoot hogs but only wanted me to use a rimfire. I shot 22 mag FMJ out of a Marlin. I went for head shots only and always aimed between the eye and ears. Lots of hogs walked but more than half of them did not. I would shot them while they were feeding on cattle feed. They owner wanted dead pigs but did not want centerfire rifles near his cattle.

More like 40 yards.

I have used hollow tip, hornady and Remingtons with the ballistic tip, and FMJ. I have shot hogs at 75 yards with FMJ and hogs from 125 yards with hollow tip. Just put it in the right spot.

It also depends on what your gun likes to shoot. My grandpas .22mag shoots the same with all of them but mine does not. Mine only does well with the hornady vmax

I have killed them with the Federal 50's, CCI Gold Dot, and Hornady critical defense. All three worked well.

I've used several different kinds, and as others have mentioned, shot placement is the most critical component when you're going hog killing with 22 Mags. In my experience, after having done some autopsies, the CCI MiniMag TNT's do the most damage.
