Hey guys I'm new to duck hunting and was wanting to get a a new automatic in the $800 ish range for duck & dove hunting. I've looked at a few Beretta A300's and also Benelli M1's, but came across a like new Browning Citori 12 gauge. I believe it's the CXS, has a 28" barrel, and wood stock. It's like new condition and the guy is asking $800. I wasn't considering an over under, but it seems like I miss my 3rd shot every time anyways and from what I can find that's a good deal for that gun.

What are yawls thoughts?

Thanks

That is a good price and I prefer an O/U for the better handling, different chokes in each barrel and fewer possible (like none) action problems. I have a couple less expensive O/U's for hunting so I don't scar my better ones that I use for skeet and trap...I agree 3rd shot is usually a 'Hail Mary'

Where and how will you be doing most of your hunting? There’s really 2 considerations, how you shoot it, and what are you putting the gun through.

For what I put my gun through duck hunting, no way I’d want to drag a nicer gun through it. If you don’t care or don’t hunt rough an O/U is fine, and will shoot all the ducks you’ll ever wanna shoot.

Do you shoot the citori well? No point having it if it doesn’t fit your eye and you can’t shoot it well.

The missing your 3rd shot anyway comment should be addressed over time. Being new to duck hunting you probably have a combination of factors making your shots less than ideal. Ducks seem to move pretty fast when your first shot is 30 yards and still flying. It all slows down when that first shot is 10yds and backpedaling to land. No point in having 3 shots for the first scenario.

Buy what you shoot the best, and are willing to take the places duck hunting will take you, good luck

I have a 12 ga Citori but I only use it for dove and upland where the shooting is fast and the 3rd isn’t possible much. I suppose if I was on a good private hunt I would consider it, but IMO that 3rd shot is pretty important for ducks on public water. Especially during slow years like this one, gotta make hay when ya can. I can take my time and still get the 3rd off well within range. Not sure why you wouldn’t want it.

Also, if recoil is an issue for you the OU can kick like a mule with 3” duck loads.

But $800 for a 12 ga Citori is a pretty good deal. Make sure it is steel shot compliant and would help if it was chambered at 3”.

That is about half what the CXS actually sold for new and its a fairly new offering, 2018 was the first yr offered if I recall correctly. If it is a legit deal, you can flip it and not lose money and possibly make money on it.

I would be wary, make sure to get a receipt/bill of sale with his/her information, you can verify the serial number thru Stolenweapon.com or hotgunz.com

Thanks for all the input fellas. It’s a wood stock, steel compliant, takes a 3”, and the seller is trustworthy. I’ll be doing quite a bit of public hunting next season and will be getting there and back in a metal boat. I think that would be hard on a wood stock citori. I may still get it and at least use it for the summer dove season. I’d think i could trade or sell it after that time if I want something else.

In all honesty, I'd buy that OU to have for dove and upland bird hunting. I looked at a Citori 725 field Saturday and it retails for $2,149.99

And then go get the Outlander later if you can't afford to buy both.

Buy the Citori. If you want something else later and decide to sell the Citori, it won't cost you anything to have tried it out. I've bought and sold a handful of guns that way. Free trials are never a bad thing. You always learn something about what you like or don't like.

I was wrong it's not a CXS it's a superlight. Anyone have experience / suggestions about that model?

I have a lot of Citoris. Buy it, that is a great price regardless if you use it for ducks. The one downfall with an OU hunting ducks is the recoil from heavy loads. I shot my 525 for awhile shooting crane and heavy Black Cloud loads. Traded a new Citori 12ga that I had stashed back for a Benelli M2. Haven’t looked back on that one.

That’s exactly what I’m thinking. I’m going to get it tomorrow and will shoot it for a bit. If I don’t want to keep it I shouldn’t have an issue trading for a nice automatic.

Buy it and never take it duck hunting. I have a citori 20g featherlight for doves. It will never see a duck load

Over Unders can be a pain in the arse in blinds..Depending on the size of the blind.. One guy in our group has one.. he is always on the end so he can point it out when closing the gun....

I use a citori 725 field 12 gauge for duck hunting. I use 2 3/4" Bismuth. During teal season and thae beginning of the first split I use Heavy Teal. I have never shot better and I am 71. I am left handed and have previously used a BPS. Liked it because the spent shells eject from the bottom. I shoot mostly decoying ducks so I rarely use my 3" Heavy Metal.
My lease/club is easy to hunt so my shotguns rarely get severely abused.

Wood stocked guns have accounted for scads more ducks than synthetics. They have also lasted a hunter that hunts hard an entire lifetime. That Citori will outlast you. In rugged conditions it will be more reliable than any new auto you buy. That is a positive tradeoff for a third shot and why break action shotguns are the top choice of competitive shotgunners. Buy it and hunt hard with it for $800.

This

I hunt with sweet 16 and wood stock.
I can care less if bumped or scratch all over.
Its made to hunt and not to hang over ur fireplace.
Plus the old skool look with all the scratches marinates well.

If wood stocks are worry here's a couple options if you want O/U for waterfowl
