I drove to Elephant Mountain for a possible standby position, again this year. Thankfully, I got lucky last year (details in a previous post). The drawing was yesterday morning and that hunt is currently "in progress". I was not as lucky this year and was not drawn. However, a couple of guys that were drawn, have been making that trip, numerous times, trying to get lucky on a standby pick. I have seen these guys at several other properties, as well, and they seemed to be "snakebit"; as their luck has been terrible. Although I was disappointed and "possibly a little bit jealous";), I am genuinely happy for those guys and wish them good luck and success. And by-the-way, kudos to Dewey Stockhorst, the biologist who handles the hunt there. Besides being a "nice guy", he handles the drawing in a very professional and fair manner, as opposed to some of the questionable things I have experienced at a couple of other TPWD properties. If any of this year's hunters see this post, please reply with your hunting report and photos.

When I did an Aoudad hunt at Caprock Canyons there was a guy that drove strait through from Colorado trying to get on standby. He pulled in right before the hat draw just barely in time to fill out the card. He did not get drawn. He said he was driving straight back home and left headed back to Colorado. The guys working the hunt said he was a trophy hunter and would show up every year trying to get on standby. If someone has the time I bet it is not such a bad strategy for the more primo hunts and much better odds over the regular computer draw now.

WOW! And I thought I was dedicated!! I don't know that I'm willing to drive that far, for short odds.

It would seem for the money and the time spent driving that far for standby you could wait a few years and book a hunt. The DIY Aoudad hunts I seen on here are quite reasonable.

Don't want an aoudad. Where I hunt in the panhandle, there are thousands. A nuisance and pest (a lot like hogs). With all due respect to those who enjoy hunting them, I wouldn't spend an extra nickel to shoot one of the stinky things. A couple of pics from the recent mule deer season.

Does anyone have stories and/or photos of the hunt from the 1st week of January 2019?
