I had a Burris Black Diamond fixed 2 power with a 50mm objective on a Winchester Model 70 450 Marlin, originally a 7mm WSM that I had rebarreled.

I removed it when it was damaged, sent it to Burris for repair and it cannot be fixed. They are giving me a few choices, but nothing I am really thrilled about.

So what are my options, seems like the old low power fixed scopes are a thing of the past. I know that scopes have come a long way in 20+yrs since I bought this one.

I prefer to stay with a 30mm tube and fixed 4 power or less. I really would like a 50mm objective, but I am not seeing anything, actually didn't see anything in 40mm either. I think 32mm or 36mm are as close as I am going to get?

Can't help in the Burris line, but I put Leupold 6x42 fixed power scopes on most of my rifles anymore.

Capable of shots out to 400 yards with the regular fine duplex on my 7Mag or even 300, and with the heavy duplex they are indestructible and great at low light on my muzzleloaders and slug guns.

Meopta has a 6x and some real nice big obj in a 7 x

Hard to find in fixed power these days. A variable with low range is a lot easier to find

Have looked though a Meopta Meopro R2 2-12X50 30mm that was real clear.

I have a Swarovski Z8 1-8x24, they make it in a 1.7-13.3x42, it's solid and unbelievably clear. I really didn't want to drop this kinda money on a rifle that I have way less than $1000 in and one that has a range/use of less than 150yds. I think the furtherest I ever shot a hog with it was about 125yds. I just don't have the area to shoot past that. I bought the Z8 for the 458 Socom AR, it's perfect for that rifle. This Winchester is a little ungainly with a 22" tube, it's not what I would consider quick handling, it's more of a box blind wait and see rifle.

I need to drive down to SWFA and look at their inventory and see what I can find.

I think today’s 42 and even some 36mm objectives are going to outperform the 20 year old Burris. I would look at the Leupold FX series which is 1” or if money is no object camera land has some very nice fixed power S&Bs

Moderately priced glass has come a long, long way in the past 20 years. I think variables from the better manufacturers are now about as durable as the older fixed scopes, so the only real objection to a variable might be weight.

Variables pretty much own the market. I have an awesome weaver 2.5-10x56. Very clear and bright.

SWFA makes fixed SS scopes, and they are very good, for not much money.

Trijicon accupoint 2.5-10x56 is great option too

Glass and coatings have improved quite a lot. The only consideration is if you get into the crazy high maginifcation range like 2-16x or something where there's so much stuff in the scope it cuts down on light transmission. You can get a 4x40, but really anything over 32mm is a waste.

Multiply the power by 7 to get the biggest the objective could be and do anything extra. That's why those European night hunting fixed powers go like 8x56.

The 2-10x50 someone suggested would be as good as anything.

Natchezz SS has a Weaver Grand Slam 2-8x for cheap these days.

Not really within the specs of your op, but I'd say if you are set on fixed power I'd get the Leupold FX-3 6x. Heck, it still comes in gloss....

I just went with the Leupold FX-II 4x33mm for my 45-70. I've tried several low power fixed and variable scopes on this rifle over the years including a long eye relief scout scope. I think the old 4X is the best. Light transmission is good. I don't think a larger objective gains you any more light transmission with a 4X scope.
