Not wanting to highjack another thread, I thought it best to start this one to discuss applications where synthetic grease is preferred for use on a firearm rather than oil.

The only applications where I prefer grease rather than oil is with the slides on handguns, and internal springs on rifle bolts.

What are you thoughts about when to use grease and when to use oil?

I only use grease on hinge pins and forend/action knuckles on double guns. Everything else gets a light oil.

I do not believe in putting grease on any semi-auto workings that could be slowed down with grease that could thicken(colder temps).

If I owned a double I believe I’d use grease where TDK does. I use BreakFree CLP for everything..

Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

Grease belongs nowhere on a bolt action, or semi-auto rifle.

It's glue for debris.

A very interesting video that points out how oil can be worse in collecting powder residue.

my bolt guns get bolt grease on the lug contact points, bolt lube on the body.

AR gets Q-Lube Black and Blue, also Weapon Shield.

Dan Wesson 1911, gets cleaned with Kroil and FP-10 ONLY .

rifles are stored in gun socks, barrel down, in the safe. all get generous baths of G-66 or Ballistol

i'm sure a $2.00 can of 3-1 would do the same thing confused2

Could be wrong but suspect we all agree on grease only on choke tubes.

I quit using any type of grease on guns years ago. Keep them clean and oil only IMO, and a Teflon based oil if you can find it. MSA Medium Grade weapons oil is the best (military issue). I used to buy it by the case from my local Army Surplus in Aransas Pass, before the government declared it caused cancer and banned it. You want to talk about a smooth bolt, or a smooth pall on your bait caster….that oil couldn't be beat.

Believe it or not, I've actually had some luck with certain greases on certain semi-auto rifles. Once used a lithium based bike grease, which this was a high end to prevent gunk build in road bikes, on a bcg because it was either that or run dry (I used to road bike alot). Since then I do put a very then layer of high viscosity lithium based grease on some bcg's based on usage. If I know I'm using one in particular alot, I'll probably forego the grease and only oil. But If I'm not sure when I'll pull said rifle again as I store them in the safe, I might lightly grease just the bcg.
then again I could be doing it all wrong too.

Also, I use some grease when storing weapons, especially on some older ones I've had previous rusting issues. A shotgun in particular from hard use has some minor surface rust. I will slather a little at those spots for protection since this is my pump and seldom gets used. And the stupid forend cap for my semi shotgun gets it because of rust issues again.

I use grease when I’m tuning a trigger. Trigger Butter.

Grease on certain trigger mechanisms is asking for issues, especially in the area of getting proper and consistent reset.

I also recommend using grease on choke tube threads.

I use grease on my AR rifles and have for years. It doesn't burn off like oil does. I use grease on the locking lugs on my bolt guns too. 2cents

Only place I use grease is on the ramp on the back end of the bolt, and on the back side of the locking lugs. I might consider using oil-only if I put my rifle in tougher environments...but I don't.

If it slides, grease it. If it spins, oil it. Advice found on CMP on this very question. YMMV

Never happened before..

I used to duck hunt with a guy that would "boil" his internals in STP, allow them to cool down and use cheesecloth to wipe off the excess. I never once knew him to have a issue regardless of how cold it got.

He also didn't have any sense of smell, claims his nostrils were toasted in Korea, STP boiling is the equivalent of burning dirty diapers and human flesh at once.
