Just left Academy and forgot to pick up Rem Oil. There is an ACE closer to my house so I stopped to see if they had any and they didn’t. Guy at store suggested 3-IN-1. Is it safe to use for wiping down a blued riffle barrel? I think I attached pictures of it but not really sure....

Been using that and others since I was 10 years old. If it’s bad for gun finishes, I’d know it by now.

Have used it in the past.

Have also used mobil 1 5w30, rotella 15w40 and 5w40 and many other types of automotive oil. For rust prevention etc. in my mind oil is oil.

I prefer a dedicated gun oil...but in a pinch, I think oil is oil. I'd rather use olive oil than just let it rust. Not that I'm advocating olive oil for a gun, but you get my point.

Use it on my bolt, and inside the action all the time.

The best rust preventative found is WD-40 "Corrosion Resistant". A man's website called "Luck Gunner" has his excellent extensive testing he did on as many commercial oils he could find. I think 50 samples, and that one was the best at preventing corrosion. A different oil was best at lubrication, in his testing. 14 months ago, I decreased, and wire brushed my entire lathe. 40 years of neglect was visible. I applied the WD-40 "Corrosion Resistant" to it then, and have not had to reapply it since.

I used to think the same, but do not any longer. Through quite a bit of reading, there are some additives that are not helping a firearm. But, engine oil, is better than no oil. Just maybe not in use as a "forever" lubricant, just a stop gap. Especially the aerosols have some propellants in them that can be unfriendly.

The 3-IN-ONE FAQ actually recommends it for firearms.

Used it for years and still will if nothing else is available. The one Jason listed is good as is corroaion-x and hornady one shot gun cleaner and lube. Those 3 are penetrating oils like standard WD-40 never dreamed of being apply tet sit a short time and wipe off your metal is still protected

I recall reading that some spray type products like WD-40 were harmful to blued finishes any opinion on that?

Agree, I guess I don't really think any oil will work for anything, but if I need to wipe a gun down there are many things that will fill the bill other than remoil etc. without doing harm.

I’ve put a lot of rounds through guns lubed with Hoppes, remoil, transmission fluid, 2 cycle oil, 10w30, lubriplate, every new super terrific hi speed low drag AR grease/lube, and they all work fine.

I can’t say what they will do to bluing, however.

No issues so far and I use the Corosion X on the Cooper and a highly polished deep blued custom

Yes I have used 3 in 1 oil on firearms in a pinch.

3 in 1 will work just fine - When I was a kid I would borrow the bottle of 3 in 1 that was in every elder female relatives sewing machine to clean my guns and never once had an issue.

Now if you want a near lifetime supply of gun oil for cheap, just wait until your local auto parts store has the 5 quart jugs Mobile1 20w-50 on sale and your good to go.

Think about it like this..... If that oil will hold up to the demands of a $20,000 race engine; then what makes it inferior to use in your firearm?

This article on a very comprehensive test of just about every product on the market has been around for a while but is very much worth a look.

I use Hornady One Shot as the final application when cleaning my firearm barrels and a good oil for the internals. As a dry lube, I feel the Hornady product works best at protecting the bore without impacting bullet performance. The outside, including metal and wood, gets a coat of Renaissance Wax.

I have posted this before on THF: Forty years ago, I had a hunting buddy who used WD-40 on his guns. I told him that was a big no-no and he just ignored me. A short time later, I tried it myself. I have used it ever since to clean, lubricate and protect all my guns and have never had a problem of any kind.

so funny how marketing makes so much money for all these "gun oil/grease" manufactures for basically a quart of car oil and some bearing lube.

Hey, I drink every flavor of this koolade !! I have a plastic tub dedicated for all my cleaning products, probably 100 different ones.

one for barrel, one for hot weather, one for cold weather, copper, carbon, rust, locking lugs, bolt carrier, suppressor, Yada, Yada

After learning from the 3 Gun guys around here about 0W-20 or 5W-20 Mobil-1 Full Synthetic, four parts, and one part Automatic Transmission Fluid, that is what I have been using the most, on bolts, and actions. That is all I have been using in gas guns. I've had the least amount of failures since.

I’ll tell you this, most gunsmiths arent using expensive shelf bought cleaners and oils labeled for guns.

if you get a new Uberti firearm made in italy, it'll be lubed with castrol engine oil.

A top USPSA shooter was asked what oil he used on his gun, his response, "whatever was in the goody bag at the last match"

While any oil is better than no oil to protect metal surfaces, some seem to leave behind more residue than others. For example, Frog Lube has been found to be outstanding in protecting against rust, but leaves behind a sticky residue.

It's why I use Hornady's dry lube on outside surfaces that don't see wax because it's which is much cheaper than Frog Lube and performs almost as well and without any left behind residue. However, I wouldn't argue with those who say a good synthetic oil is best for metal-on-metal workings.

Doesn’t really answer your question but. I use hornady one shot case lube on my rifles and it does a really good job of keeping them rust free. Also seems like it just soaks in and makes em shine.
