Just getting into hunting, my resolution is to shoot a pig/deer and process it myself. Been practicing my shooting and watching videos on cleaning animals. Hopefully I can make this happen before the year is over.

These are also my resolutions... got a new 300 win mag the other day... have a couple trips planned to nm in the spring and summer to shoot coyotes with it..... pretty much just going to practice with this rifle and put in for several units in New Mexico. If I don’t draw in New Mexico then I’ll make a trip to see a friend in Idaho.... but a big Mule deer is priority one

learn something new everyday and you will have never wasted a day.

Good luck to you on the draw. A big mule deer is the hardest free range trophy to get I'm told. I'm putting in for a draw also in NM and if I hit I will probably have to knock over a Seven Eleven or two.

1)First thing I am going to do is plan better. So I can bow hunt more. I am busy with my job like most of us. I missed the week of bow season wanted to hunt and another week during gun season where I had to travel and couldn't hunt.

2)Food plots (put my new 50 hp Mahindra 3550 to work)

3)Hunting truck,
Winch for hunting truck. (rained so much, its a wonder I didnt get stuck would still be trying to walk out) will require a front bumper
cargo rack
Mud tires
Seat redone

4)relocate my feeders, I have a couple in the wrong locations

5)Move one of my box binds, I put it on the wrong side of Sendero/rightway

6)2 more cell trail cams. I have two in the field. One new in box I didnt get set up, so I have to buy one, may be buy more

7)Extend the roofs of two of my box blinds, Deer View windows or not, still gets wet as much rain as we had. May even add gutters LOL.

8)Buy cheap camper trailer or Fema trailer or something. 30 min from my lake house to my lease is not that far but it sure would be handing to get on my 4wheeler and go.

If I get half that done I will be lucky!!!

Thanks, Billy

1) Sell some of my rifles and get a custom rifle
2) Quit waiting on "hunting" buddies to decide on hunt, to only back out at last minute. Doing solo hunts this year.
3) And follow Randy Newberg's advice, "Hunt all you can, you will run out of health before you run out of money".

1. Get out and walk more then just sitting in the blind.
-Hunt the areas that we don't have blinds in that get no pressure
2. Hunt more water sources(ponds and water trough's)
3. Don't wait until the last weekend to shoot my buck! Have been way to picky the last 4-5 years and have pasted up some really good deer early to never see them again.

1. Break the hog curse! I hunted HARD in 2018, 16 multiple-day outings in Junction, Round Mountain and San Saba areas and *NEVER* got to see a hog, let alone get a shot at them. These are properties where hogs are abundant, and on many of these trips other hunters took multiple pigs while I never even saw one! Sounds funny but it's absolutely true!
2. Be more diligent about placing cameras early, and place them in transit corridors rather than right next to the feeders
3. More spot-and-stalk hunting and less sitting in blinds. Nothing wrong with the latter, but I really like to glass and then try to get closer
4. Guided Nilgai cow hunt THIS year, no excuses
5. Shoot the axis trophy that my friend is generously allowing me to kill at his ranch. I hunted hard in 2018 and could never close the deal on the right buck, so 2019 is it, I can feel it!
6. Try more venison recipes, and share more venison with friends. For the future of hunting, we need more people getting into it

Easy - quit passing on nice deer waiting for hoss that never shows. I say this every year, and never follow through once season starts thinking there will be a better buck show in just a few more minutes.

I started deer hunting when I was 10. East Texas, South Texas and the Hill Country.

I was 16 before I killed my first hog. unti that point I had only seen maybe 1 or 3 pigs.

Since then I've shot my share but my deer kills still way outnumber my hog kills. I just don't see them like other people do.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
