Starr is the 39th largest county in Texas out of 254, comprising over 1200 square miles. As with other counties, there could be a significant amount of hunting in some areas and other others still full of game. In other words, asking if the entire county is "shot out" is unlikely and even more unlikely that anyone would have such information.

In laws are from there. Lots of high fences. If looking to lease smaller tract I wouldn’t.

Used to hit near Roma, late 70s to early 80s. Some deer, some decent ones but lots of road hunters back then too. Was happy to leave it for Webb/Zapata county line. For us, was more and larger deer overall.

I know it's the only county in America, if you can prove you're a member of The Native American Church, you can buy Peyote legally. 'Probably doesn't help your situation though.

Funny Creek, my Dad had a husband and wife from that church request to "hunt for peyote" on our lease outside of Roma in early 80s. Dad let them do it and learned it's a group bedded, bulb type cactus. They had certified cards indicating it was legal for them to possess peyote. Funny coincidence to your comments.

Hunted there for years, gave it up. Nothing but troubles with poachers, trespassers, and few low fence animals.

My first thought is...why is it not leased now?

Some guys I know leased 1600ac in that area for 2yrs. I won’t go into all the details but it was bad. As stated above lotsa poachers AND family n friends hunting while lease hunters weren’t there. Owners and even a cop(owners brother) insisted nobody hunting it except lease hunters. Lease hunters busted em all out with hidden cameras.

Star county is the poorest county in Texas. It’s probably the worst of the brush country counties to hunt. For the reasons above and more. With that said big deer come out of Star county every year. But those big deer come off the larger ranches where poaching is managed.
South Texas is both good and bad. Its one thing to live in Kingsville which I did many years ago and liked living there. It’s another to live in Roma. Same goes for hunting, if you have a good place in Webb Co. it’s one thing, having a cheap, place in Star Co. is another.
Thanks, Billy

I know it's the only county in America, if you can prove you're a member of The Native American Church, you can buy Peyote legally. 'Probably doesn't help your situation though. I was in the Border Patrol out of Rio Grande City from 1980 to 1983 and going North on 83, from Roma, about 5 miles to Loma Blanca Rd, there were times we'd see vehicles from Arizona parked along the road and there were card carrying Native Americans scouring the hill sides looking for peyote. There was also a house across from the old road side park before the Salineno turn off that had a garden of the stuff. RE: Starr County, further west of San Isidro, going north on 755 north of La Gloria there used to be fairly decent deer. Same with up 1017, or 2686 west of La Gloria. But you aren't far from the county line anywhere up there. Also still have a good friend in the San Isidro area who tells me that there is a bunch of illegal foot traffic through that area. For what it's worth.
