We've had the dogs out a few times with dismal results. Instead of making another 10 hour round trip drive, and having them work another weekend, hoping they find one covey, we deiced to make sure they had some fun. We picked up 50 birds and they got to spend a great day working them. Only minimal training activity here, this was about letting them do what their DNA is programmed for. We set up some groups of 4 - 5 birds, so they'd get nice flushes, plus a bunch of singles.

Several times we had two dogs on point at once, on different birds. Lots of nice honors. Let my buddy's young pup find and chase a couple, without shooting over it. One of the older dogs got to make a couple of points and retrieves close to truck.

For the most part, the birds were flighty and cooperated. There were a couple that took a boot in the rear, but the dogs did not care. Several had good enough wings to leave the property.

I think we need to be doing this more often.

Anybody else buying birds this year just to let the dogs work (not for serious training)?

We all need to practice Whoa more.

You need to try NSTRA. Rustbucket is running in the one in Floresville this weekend. .
