i can tell you this from experience- don't buy cheap traps. either get MB or Bridger. you can use those and not have to repair and weld on them every time you catch something. i have one victor at the house i had to weld one of the frame ears back on. the dukes i have had to be baseplated to be half usable because the frames flex so much. you can always snare, but they're good for one time. if you're going for bobcats or coyotes and catch a possum, well too bad. your snare is now junk because the 10 cent possum or coon kinked it all up and you have to toss it and use a new snare. a quality trap will last you lifetime with care if you don't lose it or it gets stolen.
good luck

i should also add to not buy traps that are too small for the job. an animal can tear up a cheap trap or one that's too small to take it

Trapping is a fun sport and can be extremely productive in the right areas. I have trapped over 50 years, since I was a little boy back in NY and NJ. Much better out here in the West. Lots of info videos on YouTube and plenty of traps and supplies out there on CraigsList and EBay. Duke, Fleming, and Bridger are the best out there now in new ones, and the older Oneida Victor were good also. New Victors are cheap soft steel and rust bad, lose their strength, and you need to over size considerably to hold strong animals. Get a 1 or 2 year subscription to Fur Fish and Game magazine for about $1.50 per month. Fleming has lots of supplies, and Midway has a pretty good line of equipment also. Lots of people are getting out of it as we lose opportunity and you can get some screaming deals on quantities with free shipping.
Good luck!!!

With 3 acres I would use snares.

3 acres is not a lot of ground to be trapping for predators that may have a home range 10 times that size. Do you have a lot of landowners with free ranging dogs in the area?? I think the reference above to look into snaring is spot on. Again, the internet is your friend and all of the available videos will show you what to do or not do. Tom Miranda (famous bowhunter) is an old time trapper, and I know his old videos have been converted to DVD's.
You might be looking at only 2-3 coyotes or 4-6 foxes on your whole place. Walking the perimeter would give you an idea of what you really have, be it deer, pigs, coyotes. You will have a bobcat or two on the place but will not see signs of them. Best to have a leg hold trap with an attractor feather or some thing of the sort. Be sure to check into the TPWD requirements for the snares, as some states require self-relaxing locks, deer stops and minimum loop sizes and frequency of checking them.
