Interested. Anything more to it? That must refer to the first grave in that cemetary, I'm sure there were many white eyes killed by Indians before 1855

The definition of the characters is in great shape for the age of it. I've seen newer ones in worse shape. Pretty cool find, poor kid.

Jack Loftin used to come talk at our school when I was a kid. I remember him saying that Jack Co had more unknown, "killed by indian" graves than any county in Texas.

Hunted outside of Georgetown and found a box blind in an old cemetery. Several of the graves where those of slaves - nothing but a flat rock stuck in the ground. Oldest grave was for a little boy age 2 from 1853. Newest one was from the late 1870's. One of the guys on the lease wouldn't hunt that stand for love nor money

Strange that child's name was unknown yet birth year was. I know a bunch of kids by name, hardly know any of their birth years.

Considering the condition of the marker, it could possibly be a remake of an old marker that was deteriorated over 100+ years, or done several years later with limited information. If I had found the oldest marker in a cemetery with limited legible information, perhaps I would have given the new one the same epitaph. It would take a lot of reading to put a story to that loss, if even possible. Sad

Those finds are very interesting, and somber. When my wife and I were looking at land, we found a place that had an old isolated cemetery like that. Several unknowns and large family member cemetery.

I asked about a cemetery I'd seen from the road for many years. The landowner owns Behrend's Feed in Luckenbach. He took me and my daughter in his truck and showed us up close. It was a family killed by, what another German neighbor to ours called, "Der hangerbande" - the hanging band - Confederate vigilantes in the German communities (Fredericksburg, Comfort, and to some extent Kerrville, although the Schreiners were Confederate) that were against secession. Apparently a family came home while the vigilantes were stealing their pigs. They were all killed. I tried to write a book about it for several months until I realized that the writing sucked big time. All this to say, we have absolutely no idea how hard life was back then.

Seen a few, usually in wayward forgotten, or small old cemeteries, quite a few from Springtown up thru Wichita falls. Way back before Oklahoma was turned into an Reservation, Texas had one around Jacksboro area and this was where many raids originated, to the point the res was moved north over the red river. Raids then originated from Oklahoma, go figure. Want a fantastic read? if you can get a reasonable priced copy, get this book "Indian Depredations In Texas". It will surprise you how the "west" was far different than the Hollywood "west". BTW, the small town Of cottondale near me, there are around 5 areas (on private land) that people, or families where wiped out by Indians.

I’ve stopped by several cemeteries around Bowie. Lots of graves marked by square rocks.

Another grave y'all may find interesting. in Cottondale TX cemetery, "Machine gun Kelly", you can easily find it, just note the last name was purposely misspelled "Kelley".

It depicts every documented Indian fight involving civilians in Texas during the 1860s. It is shocking how many people conducted their daily lives without firearms nearby while most of the guys on THF are afraid to walk to their stands without at least two guns. lol The deer lease isn't quite as dangerous as some want it to seem.
