I received a skinning knife as a gift and the scales have been sloppily coated with a poly. It covers the scales, tang and a little of the base of the blade.
Any tips are greatly appreciated. Is there a way to refinish this? What type of wood do you think it is. It is from a Texas knife maker and the knife looks quality, except for the scales...
I am skilled enough to tackle most projects, but my knife experience only goes as far as using and sharpening.
Any thought and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I agree with Chop. That's a good link.

Thank you sir. The article is definitely resourceful and I'm looking forward to cleaning up the scales. I'll try and post "after" pics upon completion.

Now, where can I fit this in on my honey-do list...........
