My fourth trip to Colorado proved to be our lucky year. My first 3 years ended with some really close calls on some cow elk and a black bear another year. Luck was on our side this year as snowfall was expected the day after we arrived. Plummeting temperatures sent the bucks into rut a few days later. Day 1 saw us doing tons of walking with only a few doe being spotted. Plenty of tracks were seen in the snow which we would use to our advantage on day 4. Day 2 we decided to investigate some new country at lower altitudes. The morning started very promising as we spotted several doe and a young buck hanging with the pack. We decided to split up for the evening hunt and only could find a few does. Day 3 we decide we will hike several miles in to investigate some sage brush fields bordering private land. No deer spotted but we new we were in the right are as the terrain was covered with deer and elk tracks coming and going. We hiked back in for the evening only to be pestered by 2 lowlifes on a 4 wheeler (that we’re not allowed). My buddy has a brief conversation with the guys and in the end we decided it was best to back out. Day 4 and feeling tired and dejected after many miles of walking for not we decided to sleep in and rest. Knowing fresh snowfall would reveal new signs we decided to head back to our original hunting area from day 1. We split up both working different ski runs. As 4pm approaches we are both frozen as we bedded down into a foot of snow. 430ish comes and my buddy has a few doe appear and not to long afterwards a trailing buck emerges. Day 5 after a long night on the mountain we once again decide to sleep in. For the evening we decide to head back to the same area. It does not take long before we spot 4 doe bedded down in the nearby woods. After several minutes convinced there is no buck nearby we treck further into the hunting grounds. 3 miles into the hike we notice the deer signs are in less abundance. We decide to hike back to locate the group of does that were bedded down. When reach the the area we now notice there are 7 does to this group. We slowly work I way around the knob not to spook the does. As we do my buddy spots a buck about 100 yards away. We drop to a knee, steady the gun and the rest is history. A local spotted this buck in early September and was able to snap a photo of him in velvet. I went into the trip just hoping for a nice symmetrical 3*3. Instead I was able to come home with a dream 9*6 buck. He would have been a 10*6 but had a broken kicker. Christmas came early and my wife and family are helping to pay for my taxidermy bill.

Great buck, you worked hard for him. Before Fish and Game came through and killed every mule deer they saw over the cwd fiasco, there were a lot more deer and big bucks to be found.
