Hey all, glad to be a part of the community. Just joined and y'all seem accommodating. I'm a teacher and want to get away on my break. I just got in to hunting and am the only person I know who hunts, which kinda sucks.

I want to hike and hunt and my two options right now are trying to find dove in the panhandle or going out to East Texas (Old Sabine, Bannister, or Neches). For a beginner, what do you guys recommend? I'm not looking for specific spots. I do want to find out on my own how to scout, etc., once I get there, but I don't want to drive way the hell out to the panhandle if it's not worth it and that's the kind of advice I'm looking for. Thanks, and have a good Christmas holiday.

EDIT: The panhandle spot would be Matador.

welcome

If you haven't yet, you need to take a hunters safety course and get the certificate in order to get a hunting license.

Dove hunting this time of year can be good in the second season out around Matador. The are alot more concentrated on food sources if the place your hunting has them.

It's illegal to bait them so be aware of not throwing out grain or corn to attract them. Scouting where your hunting first for where they feed and roost is your best bet.

For hunting during the break you might look in the outfitters section of this site. They usually have doe and hog hunts available pretty cheap this time of year. They could help teach you the basics as well.

Welcome sir.

This guy is advertising in the lease section for dove hunters. I have always enjoyed the second season.

Welcome and hoping you find as much enjoyment in the field as we who are addicted do.

Get the annual state hunting permit for 50.00. It will give you access to low cost time afield for hogs, dove, small game etc.

If you haven't as indicated get your hunter safety certificate if it applies. You have National Forest within a couple hours drive and they have game.

Good luck and welcome aboard.
