What are the reason for and against rattle canning an ar? Got a sbr so I ain’t selling it and debating if I shoot rattle it. I would prefer cerakote but do not want to take it apart.

There are some really good rattle can paints available today. While they aren't as durable as Cerakote finishes, they are pretty tough, plus they can be touched up easily if they get scratched up. Prepping & cleaning the surfaces to be painted is the most important part of the process in order to get great results and a finish that will last a long time. Here's my 6.8 SPC II that I painted with both rattle can and air brush -

I have done some in the past that came out great Just sprayed a lot of break cleaner to make sure the gun was clean. Held up surprisingly well..

Once the color is down, and well dry, put a couple or three coats of flat clear coat over everything. It'll really help it all stay put.

The only pro is cheap. The biggest con is resale value will suck but you already said you won't be selling.

I may use some of my scrap wood just to test how good of a pattern I could do. Not expecting hilly billy level on my first try...that looks good

Ive rattle canned 3 rifles and had 3 rifles cerakoted. IMHO, rattle can jobs can be done really well if done right. Not as durable as cerakote but also a fraction of the price. I wouldnt rattle can a nice, expensive gun but no problem doing budget guns.

I like rattle can. Easy to do, affordable, and easy to strip and re do if you want to change things up.

As you can see in this pic,I didn't have mine put together when I started, but you do have to put it together when painting camo patterns on it if you want things to line up.

Not expecting hilly billy level on my first try...that looks good Cleric,I purchased some cheap vinyl stencils online for my camo pattern. Spray your base coat / 2 coats. Then spray two other colors in the areas that you will place the stencils. After you place the stencils, then spray with your top coat color, and outline the stencils with a contrasting color. Remove the stencils, and spray 2-3 coats of matte clear, and your done. Thanks for the compliments guy's. Painting guns isn't hard, you just need to prep and clean really good, then take your time spraying everything.
