I am heading up tomorrow after pheasant and quail. Skipped my trip last year and wondering how anyone has done up there so far this year? Any insight in to what crops are working and places to find birds mid day in loafing areas? Any info is appreciated, please feel free to PM me with any info or recommendations. I will report back on what we see and harvest.

Taking my 9 year old lab who has lived for the past 2 years with us in Bangkok, TH. Just got back for a visit in December and have already been on a few duck hunts....... never seen her shiver like she has in her 9 years....

Drove through Hayes Last week on my back from a trip to SW NE.

Mostly all the crops seemed to be out. I only hunted in Nebraska right along the border north of Colby but Bird Numbers were great. Way up from the past few years.

Q-all was that walking or private I hunted this year east of there about 40 minutes and numbers were fair hunter numbers outrageous.

Going to Hays KS on Friday. Will be hunting Saturday, Sunday. Hope it's good

I hunted opening weekend 50 miles west of there we really had to work for the birds. Ron

Did pretty well all things considered. Was one short of a limit each day, had the opportunities to limit just poor shooting. The mornings were much more productive for us. Just two hunters and my lab, our best success came from freshly harvested milo edges in the CRP. The windiest of days the dog was having a field day scenting roosters and getting them up. Less quail but they were still around than years past.

OK, got back on Monday from hunting in Kansas. We stayed in Hays KS but most of the hunting was on the border of Nebraska on WIHA. My hunting partner shot a Prairie Chicken (first one ever.) We jumped about 15 pheasants but did not bag any. Only had one good shot on one rooster and so sad to say but I was behind it. We hunted standing corn and pushed about Ten out the other end but never got a shot. We did manage to bag one bobwhite though. OK, so this was our first time ever hunting pheasants and did we learn a lot!!! They like to run more than fly. I have questions about them. What are their behaviors? Where to they roost and night? Once they wake do they go to the fields like bobwhites and feed till around 10am? After that where do they go? I have no idea about hunting them so I'm open to all information about locating and harvesting them. I have read about pushing thru corn fields but there are only two of us so I don't think that will work. We are shooting 12 gauge 2 3/4 #5 about 1200 FPS 1 1/4 oz.. HELP ME PLEASE!!!

A lot of the fellas on here know more than I do, just started hunting upland in the last 3 years. I came back up to Kansas and just hunted the afternoon, got 3 roosters and a quail all in WIHA. Today my lab trailed a few roosters 150+ yards and both of these birds still got up 50 yards in front of her, shows how they know to take off when they see hunters. I have access to quite a bit of milo stalks but without serious weather or more people it is really hard to get within shooting distance of roosters this late in the year. Pheasant behavior is very weather and pressure dependent, generally worse weather the better they hold, better weather especially with little wind they can hear you and see you from a mile off. Each windy day, 15+ mile an hour winds we have better hunts because they can't hear us, we still catch pheasants running which is a testament to their eyesight. It is a lot of fun and I am learning right along with you.

Pheasant hunting with just 2 people can be very tough. They like to run, sit tight and let you walk right on by, or just out flank you. For a limited number of hunters, use natural barriers to push the birds to or use to make them get up. For example, if there is a plowed field or a winter wheat field next to where you are hunting, try to put the birds between you and it. Roads can be used , but if you have CRP across the other side, they most likely will just run across. Hunt slow. A lot of times, if you just stop for a minute or 2, they will flush.
