Going on a hunt in the morning, will be sitting on a 2 acre prairie hole that’s currently holding water. Wind should be from the NW at 10 mph. I believe we should sit on the NE side of the hole, Though if birds won’t commit they could easily land out of range. Am I over thinking this or should we set up on the NW and deal with the sunrise?
Sit on the NE side, pull your decoys closer to you and sit still. Add decoys if you can, plenty of fresh birds looking hard at so many tanks and sheetwater everywhere. Im using 2 dozen, 2 pulsators and another legging kicking thinghy tomorrow. Saw fresh birds today, buffleheads and wigeons. Killed them at 9:30 today.
Most birds were hiding from the high winds in creeks today and will be hungry first thing tomorrow, right at legal. Wait for the bigger birds till 10 am as well.
On a 2 acre hole, they might still land in the middle, since new birds are still unfamiliar with that pond. They will swimm towards your decoys for a beating. It will happen.
Just based on info given, birds will want to land on NW end, that is where I would set-up. There are all kinds of ways to deal with the sun in your face. Don't let a NW wind stop you from setting up in most favorable spot because you don't want sun in your eyes.
Just because you set your deeks in NW end of hole, does not mean your blind has to sit NW of the spot were all your shots are in the sun. Normally you can set your blind at an angle to where the kill zone does not put the bird between the sun and your eyes, that is the key. You don't have to set blind where wind is to your back and ducks come strait to you, my preference is to not do that anyway, I like my blind off to the side, sometimes I put my blind in front of the spot, in this case you would have the sun to your back.
