I went hunting at a place in West Texas between Roby and Snyder that is deep in the canyons. It is an amazing ranch and place to hunt. While there, we night hunted every night and tried to shoot some pigs in the evenings. Yesterday, we set up on a ridge over looking 3 different areas. All 3 were planted in winter wheat and had corn and protein feeders running. The main area we decided to set up on had shots between 400 and 850 yards. No problem. The other 2 fields, one was called the "Scout" field, since there was an old Scout broken down in the field. Right before dark a big group of pigs come out in the "Scout" field. The Scout was lasered exactly 1597 yards away. These pigs were on the row even with the Scout. I'm sitting up here with my 7mm/300 WM with 195 grain Bergers loaded up. I dope out the wind (1.7 mils), and the elevation (13.4 mils), and get set for a shot. I find a big boar and he's broad side. My buddy Michael was spotting me and I said here we go. I sent one round, recovered from recoil, and watch the bullet pass directly over the back of the pig. ALMOST! It was a miss by about .4 mil, which is about 22 inches at that distance. Those pigs found high gear and were gone. I sent another round at them while on the run, but no call on the round. So, it would have been a freakin' cool shot, but it was a miss! Wind call was spot on, just missed the elevation by a hair. We'll keep trying. Here's some pics of the set up. On the first picture, it covers the entire set up. The main field we were hunting was directly in front of us. The fence line was 397 yards and the far area was about 800-850 yards. The Scout field is about 1 to 2 o'clock from the main field in fropnt of us and is hard to see. One the second picture, you can see the main area only.

I don’t care what animal it is.....none deserve to suffer being on the end of a bad shot.
You didn’t have the skills to make a 1600yd shot in the conditions in which your shot was taken.

You didn’t have the skills to make a 1600yd shot in the conditions in which your shot was taken. On that cold bore shot at 1600 yards, you're right, I missed. And next time I go back we will set up in the same spot and I will learn from this shot to make my next shot hit. And I will sling lead at a pig any chance I get and at any distance.

That's almost cool Chad. My main question is, can the Scout be saved?

That's almost cool Chad. My main question is, can the Scout be saved? Unfortunately no. He said it broke down many years ago and it became target practice for many rifles, including a 50 cal. I asked the same question.

I asked the same question. Not that I have time to drive the one sitting in my garage, but hate hearing about scouts sitting in fields. I feel worse about the scout being used for target practice than the miss on the pig.

Beautiful country I would send a round at a pig at 800 yards if given the opportunity.

I lived in that part of the world for several years and have been hunting in that part of the world off and on since the early 90s. In the early 90s there were no hogs in that part of the world.
The mindset for most people on hogs is hunting, when the mindset should be eradication. If you have a safe shot on a hog, even one at 1600 yards, send it.

You didn’t have the skills to make a 1600yd shot in the conditions in which your shot was taken. First, Apparently you're on the wrong channel. Change it and move on. Pigs don't count as animals.....Period! (well, except for bacon....ah!) Second, the pig wasn't wounded and didn't suffer......So what is the point of the comment?

I'd send one at a pig at 1600 yards and I probably don't have the skills to hit one at 1000... No, I don't want a pig to suffer, but I will take chances on a pig whereas I won't on a deer. Good work Chad!

You didn’t have the skills to make a 1600yd shot in the conditions in which your shot was taken. Buy some land and have the pigs tear it up. Then come back and preach. Good shooting Chad...almost.
