I had a meeting in Austin yesterday and there is an understanding in my house that if my ‘work travels’ take me within 30 minutes of the ranch, a stop is justified ... especially during deer season. Thank goodness Hwy 36 is a major travel corridor for me!

Fortunately the Boy Scout in me (actually it was lucky laziness) was prepared; there was a sweatshirt and a rifle that hadn't gotten returned to the safe from the previous weekend’s hunting trip and was still in my backseat. I rolled into Rising Star on fumes, while gassing up the truck, I bailed out of a sport coat and dress shirt and into my campfire-scented black hooded sweatshirt. By 3:30 I was quick stepping to the blind in ‘good jeans’ nice boots, and my favorite (but somewhat pungent) sweatshirt.

As 4:15 a flock of turkeys was under the feeder. I hadn’t knocked one with a rifle before, so I figured why not? They were at 150ish yards. The longest beard in the group got lucky and somehow dodged the .308 round headed his way (because I don't miss, right?)

A quick search revealed no feathers or blood. Within 15-20 minutes of the world calming down again, in stroll 4 does. The constant wind, and probably my recent scent from stomping through their dining room had the ladies on high alert. They mill around and at 5:30 all 4 look up and in walks one of our hit list bucks.

I had multiple bow encounters with this guy with no success, but last night I let the smoke pole bark and it bit
him at 185 yards. I’m not a fan of tailgate pics, but as I was hunting solo, it was the best I could do:
