Hey Yall, Im from the fishing side of this website so I am not sure where to post this question. But I am just getting into hunting, grew up bass fishing but never hunting.
I was thinking Dove Hunting is a good place for me to begin next season and slowly build up my arsenal for other things. I eventually want to move to pigs and deer if possible. Anyone have any suggestions for me? It has always been a dream of mine and I finally got the approval from the wife haha

Welcome. Sure would be cool if you got a rifle and started with hog hunting. Only one suggestion, shoot em in the neck between the ear and shoulder, all of em.

Welcome. I started over there in 2002. I like to eat bass though...

Dove is a good and easy start. Get on a lease out WEST or do day hunts when the landowner says they have birds.

Howdy!

First off, don't ever admit you had to get approval from the wife and maybe don't admit you're on TFF either. My observation has been both will get your man card pulled pretty quick on here. Other than that, welcome to the forum.

Dove hunting would be a good start and like with anything, familiarize yourself with the regulations, the weapon you plan to use, safety, practice shooting to gain confidence and proficiency, etc. and do it well before season starts. For dove or even small game like squirrels and rabbits, I prefer 20 gauge since it's easy to carry, shoulder, and shoot. Check out the Annual Public Hunting Permit if you don't have a place to hunt, just be prepared to walk a good ways to get away from crowds or go during the week when it's less busy.

Like with any hobby, hunting can be as simple or complicated and cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Good luck in your pursuit.

Thanks y'all. I am very excited to get this started. I love shooting and have a home defense handgun. But never had the money to get into hunting.
Over this christmas break, I am hoping to get a good starter .12 gauge for dove.
I am in Fort Worth, where are good public hunting lands or leases and what can I expect as far as money spent?

Really no reason you can’t jump into some hog hunting. If you can listen to someone experienced & be safe, you’ll have a great time.

Dove hunting needs a SG and one season, Hogs can be dealt with all year then come deer season, same rifle can be used for deer. I suppose a SG could technically be used for all three

In any case, good you're giving those ditch pickles a rest, they are over rated for the cost of a bass boat anymore lol.

Best piece of advice would be to take your wife on this journey with you as much as she is willing to go, then at least she will understand it better and may end up being a participant.

Get a 20 ga over/under ---------- people with 12 ga are "blasters", not really hunters. They like to hear the gun go off and seldom hit anything.

What do you mean “one season” for dove? And what kinda of rifle would y’all recommend for a beginner for hogs

For deer and hog rifle I really would check out the Savage Trophy Hunter accutrigger with a Nikon BDC scope package. It is best package deal I think out there for the money. It is a great gun and good scope. Many replace the scope rings but ours is dead on and taken down 3 deer and many pigs in past year. Very impressed. Sure there are expensive guns and scopes but they do the same job.

For a shotgun, the semi gauge Yildz at Academy is good too. About same price. You can get a cheaper pump but I don't like pumps at all.

I would pass on public hunting for dove and just get a $250 lease out west for 2 months of hunting. Main issue is can you get out there when you want. Or day lease for $50 to $80 and kill some birds.

Thought there was another dove season that starts mid December?

Depending on county, there is a 2nd dove season. It's short, cold and not many places actually participate though. Did have a great new years day hunt once in Dallas county.

What is a SG? Never heard that acronym.

SG=shotgun.

Once you have your shotgun, take some lessons at a local range. There are several good one's in the DFW metromess. Elm Fork, Ft. Worth Trap & Skeet, Google is your friend in that search.

As has been mentioned, go and take a Hunter's Ed course. It's mostly online now in Texas and I think the cost is around $15.

As for finding a lease, there's a section here that you can possibly find a lease and other websites that list them. AS a beginner, find someone to take with you when you go look at leases that knows what to look for. Just having a pond or some grain fields doesn't guarantee there will be any doves. As for hog hunting, there are plenty of places that offer weekend hunts for $$. Some are listed here. You might also look for a mentor/friend to help you along as well.

Pay it forward - Kids are the future.

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

I don't know about all this. I'm far more concerned with keeping my marriage healthy than what members here think about my manhood. I have mentioned several times here about getting approval first and no one has said a thing. If they had, I would think it their insecurity, not mine. I have been told it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. I disagree. In fact, I ask before I buy pretty much anything over about $50. My wife keeps up with the money thankfully and I never know where we stand. If I handled the bank, we'd live in a van down by the river with all my rifles and such.

Shotgun...

Yes on the 2 separate seasons, tho most dont likely do much late season. I didn't make the point I had in my head, Meant, one gun for one type of game vs the same rifle can be used for hogs, deer and varmints, or multi uses
