Obviously it varies, but I just wanted to get some idea of what the deer density is like in Oklahoma versus Texas. I have been looking at land in Le Flore County, OK as well as Muskogee County.

I have heard that the deer can get big, but haven't heard much in regards to numbers. Anyone know what the comparison is like in that part of OK versus different parts of Texas? I.e. Hill Country, West Texas, East Texas?

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has finally totaled the numbers from last year’s deer hunting seasons.
The grand harvest total was 112,863. For the fifth straight year, Osage County was the county in Oklahoma where the most deer are killed.
Osage’s total of 5,118 deer easily outdistanced second place Pittsburg County’s total of 3,765.
Pittsburg County has been second or third in the deer harvest totals for the past four years.
The rest of the top 10 counties in 2011-12 were Atoka (3,380), Pushmataha (3,309), Cherokee (3,293), Creek (2,934), Sequoyah (2,848), Le Flore (2,722), Craig (2,709), and McCurtain (2,363

According to what I can find out, these counties have about twice the number of deer per square mile as East Texas. That could be because Oklahoma only has a nine day rifle season while Texas has about a 60 day season.
Of course nothing beats the number of deer per square mile as west and south Texas.

I have a buddy who has some low fenced land in Kiowa, Oklahoma (where we usually stop for the night on our way down from Fayetteville, AR) and I have never seen more deer in my life. It's very common to see over 15 deer at the feeder at one time and he has some very nice bucks as well. Two of which we estimated to be around 180".

I would look in the west and north west part of Oklahoma from Woodward to Kansas line, some brutes up there.

From what I read about hunting in that portion of Oklahoma is theft and poachers.

I had a lease in Oklahoma for a couple years. Beautiful area - but full of poachers. There was no fence surrounding the property I leased. We put up chains on the trails going through the property with our hunt club signs and no trespassing - only to have those promptly cut down. It was fairly common to have someone wander on the property. Hard to prevent without clear boundaries.

Personally, I prefer hunting in Texas. I like the landscape in Central and West Texas. Less trees and more open spaces. Majority of properties are fenced. I enjoy being able to see out hundreds of yards. I did enjoy the lease prices in Oklahoma. We had 4 hunters and only paid $2k/year on 750 acres. Also, Oklahoma (Pushmataha County specifically) had some giant deer.

That area is cleaning up but has a ways to go, a lot of it is how well Landowner will hold the line with trespassing. You get one that doesn’t play, locals take the hint quickly.

Had an invite to hunt north east Oklahoma along Kansas border. The deer population was very healthy and quite a few bruisers on the property. I keep wanting to lease there again but need to find 1 or 2 others willing. Looked at a lease in Pushmataha county last summer, great property but could tell that trespassing would be a problem with no boundary fences and a road all the way through the property.

Just like any place in Texas or Oklahoma, most of the deer density questions are very location dependent. Sometimes you get lucky and get on a very dense place and see a lot of deer every sit, but that follows up with not having as many booners due to the lower nutritional value for each deer. It’s kind of a catch 22...supplemental feeding can help, but that can get expensive quickly with a deer dense place.

I hunt north west Ok, not that close to Kansas, but deer everywhere and some decent deer. Shot one a few years ago that dressed out 200lbs.
