Howdy , was wondering if anyone has any info on hunting kickapoo caverns
State park ? I'm thinking of driving all the way out there to try standby, want to
Know if it's worth the drive. Any areas of the park better than others ? Any help appreciated.

I went out there last year and walked on for the bow hunt. My dad had a shot at doe the first day, and I say a really big buck about thirty yards into some really heavy brush. It was raining and he was bedded down. When I walked by he got up and shook off like a dog and then took off. We didn't have any luck but I would say that right now it has to better with the rut. It rained the entire time we were there. It is beautiful country and you can camp right there in the park. The area is rolling hills with lots of large oaks and mesquite and some open grassy areas broken up with cedars.

Thanks KOhunter . I'm mostly just wanting to get out camp and do a little hunting. Hopefully standby won't be to crowded.

Thanks pkhunter, were y'all mostly spot and stalking or blind sitting ? I'm thinking ill put some miles in on my boots. See some new country. Also was there any cell service? I prefer my phone over my antique gps.

Mostly spot and stalk for me and son but my buddy is a sitter. I don't remember about the cell service, been a few years since we have hunted there.

My son and I went there quite a few years back. The compartments where we hunted there would be now way for spot and stalk. they were very thick cedar. And at that time there was no cell phone service except if you went back out on the main road and drove to the top of a hill.

I got drawn for a hunt there a couple of years ago. Some of the areas of the park are open enough for some spot and stalk, especially if you get on one of the units with the higher elevations. Other areas are very thick ceder, so thick you can barely move through it, much less do it quietly enough to have any hope of seeing anything. I got put in a unit that had some elevation and did a little hiking around, but ended up putting a pop up blind on the point of a ridge near a spot where the deer came over from the neighboring property to the north. I got 2 does and saw several other deer. The guys camping next to me took three of the barbado sheep. According to the park staff, no axis have ever been killed in the park. There has been at least one Nilgi taken there.

Well I was able to get on standby for the hunt. Great place to hunt with beautiful rough country. Wound up shooting a 3 1/2 year old deer with 10 inch spikes. He had a busted up nose from an old injury . Several bucks taken but no monsters, however a couple of guys did shoot nilgai . I think one more still running around out there. Also a couple Audad were taken . Great staff and good camping area.
