If you could only use one knife to 1/4 a whitetail for packing out, what would it be? Keep in mind, field dressing wouldn't be necessary, 1/4's can be removed by cutting connective tissue at joints. (same for the head). When you have to carry everything, you look for ways to shed weight.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

BUCK 110. Pretty much the standard for one knife for all.

Tree Brand, 4.5" Trapper! 110 is a good knife, but doesn't hold an edge as long.

BushMonkey's S.E.R.E. And it will also let you chop some kindling and field dress a hog on your way out, and not need sharpening! This is my personal experience, not conjecture!! This knife is a true edged tool, imho.

The large Kabar folding model with two blades. The one I bought in 1970 has performed very well.....the larger blade is used for the heavy stuff and the skinner type blade for the rest.

I'll take a Victorinox skinning knife like this. I use their beef skinning knife and a deboning knife for my cattle post mortem exams. I can disassemble a grown bovine without resharpening. I've got another set I use for processing meat for sausage, etc. I sharpen them rapidly with one of their handheld sharpeners. I know its not the best for the longevity of the steel, but their cheap enough that I'll buy new if/when they wear out. Not sexy but they work!

For my purpose I'm liking the blade design of the Victorinox skinning knife and the fixed Mora. Need a fine, pointed blade to separate at the joints by cutting tendons. But, the Cold Steel Hunter mentioned above would serve great as a general purpose hunting knife and still not be too heavy. Good info, thanks.

Havalon Barcuta with an extra pack of skinning blades.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

The bush knife I made for myself; I cut me out a ground blind from oak, mesquite, cedar some dry and extremely hard., quartered a buck and still sharp.

I have a lot of knives but my go to a buck vanguard. I have a couple of them and love em.
I once drank muddy water out of a hoof print and was dang glad to get it.

I use a knife I picked up at a antique shop for $6.00 mostly. It is a lot like Doc's victorinox but has a longer blade.

Good old fashioned USMC KaBar. Skinned a hundred or two deer and trimmed brush with it. You can do prettier and more expensive, but can you really do better?
