Does anyone use a 2010=2105 AWD RAV4 for more than just light off road?. I'm not talking full bore 4 wheeling, but more than just muddy roads. capt david

What does more than light offroading entail? If your not mud bogging and not rock crawling or creek crossing I think you will be fine.

Not counting ground clearance, would you say it would go anywhere a 2x4 PU would go? capt david

I think it would go more places than a 2wd pickup. Its lighter smaller and if all wheel drive has much better traction than a 2wd pickup.

To some level, I agree with above comments… yes, most of the time, RAV4 will go more places than a 2wd pickup (minus clearance situations), however, most of crossover SUV have “on demand 4x4” so this is not true 4 wheel drive (or 4x4) system… without going into long explanation, that system can and will act as a 2wd vehicle in certain situations… of course it will happen at the worst possible second ... add low ground clearance, no skid plates \protection, small size tires and lack of good off-road tires option equates to what I have previously said: RAV4 (and many other crossovers) are designed for slightly muddy roads, ice, snow on the road and rain.

The Toyota has a button that activates all wheel drive. kinda, I think. This helps keep control in slippery situations. If one wheel begins to spin, the way I understand, it then transfers power to the wheels with traction. capt david

I had both a 2012 and 2014 RAV4 and they were bullet-proof traction machines. The short wheelbase would let you go over and around many obstacles that would stop a pickup. The problem with them was ground clearance, easy to high center. I would always specify them when renting a car on a hunting trip I flew to also. Great mileage and an all around reliable machine.

With Tacomas you can turn it on when in 4 low with Tundras it is on when you engage 4 low. The Gen3 Tacomas have another term for it but basically the m same system. I t saved my hide (or at least a very long walk) in Fannin county. I was stuck. Left side of vehicle up to the door in mud. Put it in 4 low, hit ATRAC and then locker and punched ti. I was really surprised when I got out because I had a good 30-40 yards of deep mud ahead of me.

I bought a new Subaru, but my FWD only 2001 Toyota Rav 4 has been through more mud than 95% of 4wd trucks will ever see. Only got it stuck once, and that was because I had to back up on a slippery edge to let another truck go by and it slid into a deep ditch. My poor old Rav is always in mud of some kind.

Got caught in a bad storm at our ranch once when we took my wife ford escape(similar to a rav4) down there. It did about 5 miles of dirt road and only got "stuck" once... till I figured out how to turn off the traction control.
