I don't especially like taking a deposit for a hunt that someone books. You never know if all of a sudden that person needs the money or something happens where they may not be able to come. I booked a hunt for a person who wanted to bring his son for a hunt. They were supposed to come this coming Friday night. I PMed him yesterday to ask about what time they would be arriving. I got a PM this morning saying they would not be coming and said they found a cheaper place to hunt a week ago. Thanks a lot for letting me know. I wonder if he would have let me know at all or if I would be waiting Friday night and they would never have shown up?

Rude and inconsiderate people suck. And I guess it was a member on thf that did it?

I find that surprising. While I don't know you personally Don and I have never hunted with you it seems as though from the info you have posted in the past and results of past hunts posted I doubt they will be getting the same quality of experience.

I could understand if there was a family emergency or suddenly couldn't get off work, things happen, but to just say they found a better offer is crappy. Why not at a minimum call you and say hey I found this, could you match it?

That being said, i have never had a problem giving a deposit when asked. This past weekend, I went on a duck hunt that required a deposit. When you sell a hunt you are setting aside a spot for someone to hunt that you could possibly sell to someone else, if he/she doesn't show at the last minute, then you lose out. At that point depending on the reason you have the ability to either give the funds back or recoup some of the loss of the no show.

Isn't that why you get a deposit or do you refund. Medical emergency or death would justify a return but what that guy said, no.

It's just bad-mannered to do something like that to someone. My mother would have whipped my butt. A simple phone call or nowdays a simple text not to leave you hanging.

So you did or didn't have a deposit on the hunt?

I've been shafted before not getting a deposit on work, I don't ever falter now. I will not have my time and resources wasted because you can't get your side of it straight.

Guy needs his arse beat, for sure.

Have had the same happen to us. If your not a normal client or a govt. entity we require at least 1/2 our fee up front. Ive been stiffed on the second 1/2 twice, but my boss eats it instead of me and she wont allow me to go knocking on doors asking for it.

No, you would have been waiting. In business, you never rely on the integrity of strangers when they have no skin in the game. Doing so is a bad business model no matter how good it makes you feel or how you want to justify it. You didn't get a deposit or close the sale and so failed in incentivize your potential client to act. That part is on you for having such a business practice. QSYB is right. Get the deposit and don't think twice about it.

Of course, the reason why you PM'd on Monday is that you knew there was the potential for them to not show since you didn't get a deposit or close the sale. That is why you PM'd them so far in advance, so that you could rebook the date if they weren't going to show. So that part was good.

Maybe it is time for a change to requiring a deposit, even a small deposit will motivate the person to go through with the agreement. Maybe exceptions for past clients or someone that you know will show, but "joe blow", get a deposit. A $50 non refundable deposit will at least pay for some of the aggravation of a no show.

I expect to pay a deposit if I book a hunt. If I give notice over a week, I expect a refund of deposit. Sounds fair to me! I have some deposits out now.

Always, always get a non-refundable deposit. Have them sign an agreement/contract with all of your rules and stipulations. Always....and don't feel bad about it. Otherwise, people will take advantage. Count on it.

That's really crappy of them to do. Part of me wants to know who they are if they are a THF member.

Been a looong time since I have seen any outfitter/hunting or otherwise not require at least enough to over wasted time and effort. I'd sure consider something, or some deposit protocol to cover that, since you still have the "product" if they "no show", that alone may weed out some of those types of "tire kickers" as well.

One of the many reasons that I gave up outfitting about 15 years ago...

If I was an outfitter and you gave me a one week notice that you were not coming, I would only give you a refund if I could rebook the hunt. But that's just me.

Like Mr T's idea, probably why the outfitters I have known have a backup list as a hedge

I’d go with Mr T’s idea. That seems fair to all parties. Have it in the contract so everybody is clear on it up front.

I have hunted multiple package hunts including one with Don K. I have NEVER been dissatisfied on a hunt and expect a deposit requirement as part of the agreement. If I can't afford a deposit then I probably can't afford the hunt.

I agree with this, that's why deposits are taken, there needs to be a financial commitment to the date.

Anytime I booked a hunt I expected to pay a deposit. The only way I expected a refund if I could not make it is if I could find someone to go in my place or the outfitter found a replacement for me. Otherwise I would expect to be out of deposit. Sure hope this guy does not do that to other outfitters. The days of taking honest people at their word are long gone.

Deposits are just part of the outfitting game IMO. I've always asked for one, and always expected to pay one.
