Hunts can take place pretty much anytime. The blackbuck is very regular right now so probably the sooner the better on him. Axis are always around.

Hunts are available most any time, although I try and keep them spaced out enough to keep them around and not spook them off completely

Wish I had the time in the schedule to get down there from FtW. Would love to have some of that meat for winter time!

I am interested in the axis doe hunts.....

How many acres is the property?
High fence or low fence?
Is lodging available or would I need to find a local motel?

Low fence, free range. About 60 acres. Lodging may be possible as I just finished a remodel, otherwise lodging would either be in Bandera or Kerrville.

I don't let people take spikes here so I don't know. Does can range from about 30# up to about #50 depending on size/age

I met Dave at the gate and we preceded to the estate house. We would be hunting a natural funnel between high fence on one side and along the other a road with a substantial creek alongside. It's about fifty acers with the estate house and out buildings taking up some of that. We then got my 'stuff' (Texas word for kit) we then walked a couple hundred yards and approached the side of a steep fairly small valley. There were several turkey and 3 Axis feeding around a field on the opposite side of the valley. As we approached, they all left the field, but didn't seem spooked, just cautious. Behind where we set up was a 'guest house' that was used occasionally by non hunters, so seeing people was not really a red flag. In fact Dave said if we drove up in the ranch truck, that we could probably get out and shoot one. The field was fairly open and about 120 yards long and 60 yards wide. It was a fairly steep. From the bottom of the valley to where we set up was about 50 yards. Almost directly across, to the feeder was around a hundred yard shot. From the feeder to the tree line was 30 yards on three sides. The trees, not actually trees, but more like tall shrubs were dense, One could see in a bit, they were just to thick to shoot through.

Back to the important part!
About 10 minuets after we set up, the turkey came back first 5, then 8, and finally, maybe 15 in all. We saw a buck whitetail and a couple of does, a couple of hundred yards to our left crossing toward our valley. The three Axis came to the edge of the field. we could see them, but they were just inside the trees, with too many twigs to get a shot. There was a smaller one an average adult and a larger one. probably 30-45 minuets later the feeder went off. The turkey scattered, then returned. Five whitetail, including a spike and another doe showed. The Axis came out, but stayed so close together, I couldn't get a good shot. They shortly began to leave. They finally split up and I had a decent shot. I wanted it to be perfect, paused just a second, and it was gone. The one that got away!..... Dam, I blew it. I was mad at my self, but better than not being sure of ones shot. The turkey stayed, but began to scatter around the field, the white tail did the same.

….the one that didn't!'
The Axis were there. We could see them, they just wouldn't come out. Then they did. %$#@! They're still bunched! I had my gun up, safety off and on them. They just wouldn't separate. Dave says; "they're two down to the right, a big doe and a yearling spike, don't shoot the" Bang, flop! "spike", Ok, I might of been born at night, but I wasn't born last night! I had my doe! The doe flopped again. I had aimed about 1/3 or so up behind the shoulder. Flop! It never raised it's head. "I can see blood out of its side and mouth" Dave said. Flop! "keep on her I'll get the mule and my pistol." Flop! he left, of course it stopped flopping!

DSI That's Texan for Deer Scene Investigator!

7x57 FN commercial, 98 Mauser 150grn Partitions @2700fps reloads
Distance; 75 yards from an elevation about 30' above the deer.
the bullet hit at the rear tip of the scapula, traveled between the shoulders and exited the neck.
there was very little meat damage, except the neck roast.

Right now, I am not going to be doing any more hunts as the axis have not been around very regular since we did our prescribed burns. Once they start showing back up "normal", I will resume the day hunts.
