I'm thinking about adding a protein feeder for next year, so looking for suggestions here. The corn/protein post got me thinking more about it.

Its a small LF place, so the protein would mostly be for attracting.

For those that use it. Which record rack do you suggest? I've seen a couple different kinds at TSC.

I get most of my cattle feed & corn from L&E, so that's an option as well. Would there much difference in the brands when used as an attractant?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Also, I've seen that ASF has a timed protein feeder. Would it be worth the extra money?

Check and see if you have a dealer near by for Double Down Deer feed. Record Rack is a good choice. If you are going to use a spin cast, try the Golden Nuggets.

I've been feeding protein for 4 years, mostly Record Rack, and the deer weren't really too interested in it. My 55 gal feeder would last most of the year. This year I switched to AntlerMax and they are going through 400lbs a month. Best of all it's actually cheaper too!

The ASF feeder was not a broadcast feeder. It had troughs on each side and it said it was a timed protein feeder. I thought it might save some feed if set to feed the same time as the corn feeder.

I have fed protein low fence and year round on a smaller place like yours now for 6 yrs. It is really good in October to hold bucks when they are hitting the feeders really hard pre-rut. Then late season when the rut is over for me around mid December is another really good time. All the bucks move back in post rut and really hit the feeders hard. I have fed L/E 20% since 2004 and never had any issue with deer eating it. With the timered feeder you can feed during the nighttime in the summer and during the then add some daylight hunting times also. I would feed protein only from post rut till late August then mix in some corn from then till post rut. I would first put corn only(one bag) in the feeder to start then mix in some protein after they start eating from the feeder. Add small amounts of protein till they are eating it well enough to decide on a mix you like. They will probably pick out the corn to start.

The other key about protein is I have seen bucks move in post rut and find the protein and then stay for the next year or two.
