I honestly love hunting with my rifle, but I really want to expand my season and opportunities next year. I used to shoot archery in high school. I shoot left handed so it may make finding a cheap bow difficult. I have never hunted with a bow. What should I get and where should I start? My wife said she wanted to get me one for Christmas. If your just wanting something cheap to get started you may be better off looking at a big box store. Every once in a while they have someone that actually knows how to set a bow up. Your pro shops will mostly have nicer bows and techs that know what they are doing but that comes with a higher price tag.

I would check some bow shops for used bows. Nothing wrong with a quality used bow. Then you could shoot them and try them out before you purchase. For a newbie, a bow shop can be your best friend.
What area are you located? Folks on this board can steer you to some good shops.

Go to a pro shop, the set up and advice is worth more than the difference you will pay for a cheaper bow at a big box store. Buy new so you get a warranty and the correct draw length for you. Too many times people will buy a used bow that is not the right length and fight with it cause it is cheaper. If you are wanting to save some money, look at bow companies second line bows, and discontinued bows, if you don't have to have the newest thing you can many times find good deals that way. As far as brand, i am a Mathews/Mission fanboy, but pretty much all the big name companies are turning out good bows, so you just have to try a few and see which ones you like. That is another advantage of pro shop or two, you can try out a lot of bows, most even have a lefty or two in stock now days. Good luck!

Try a Mission Bow. They don’t cost a lot and are good bows.
