I sent the Sig Kilo 1250 rangefinder back, so I put the old Nikon back in the bag until the new Leica arrives. 2 days till I get the Leica. I haven’t seen a hog or deer at a distance past about 300 yards for a week or more, so I figured I wouldn’t need any long distance ranging last evening. Wrong! There’s the limping cull buck out there at maybe 400ish. Just standing there. Wouldn’t have taken that shot anyway, but the old Nikon 600 couldn’t range it. And a bit later, here comes a whopper of a hog, and he walks out in the hay field and just hangs around like he’s waiting for an Uber. Can’t range him. He’s out more than 400, but less than 500. But...just you wait. I get the Leica 2000 on Wednesday, so if that rascal wants to push his luck, let him parade around again later this week.

Couldn't you have stalked the hog and cut the distance?

For a pig, I would have just ranged an in between point, doubled it, and let the lead fly.. Just my 2cents

I would have got out of the stand and stalked closer to the hog and killed him.

Flat ground. Would have taken a 200 yard low crawl. Way too much work. And I didn’t want to use guesswork on the distance. I have a stand closer and I’ll hunt it this afternoon.

Ideally, I’d range him, set the turret and kill him. That’s the plan, but the hog isn’t following the plan. Neither is that one horned, limping cull buck.

Ah, but the good news is that just when the light got dim, here came a marvelous 8 point. Fat, mature, tall wide rack. I want him spreading his genes, so I let him walk. I expect he’s a son of the 10 point I watched for a few years. Rack looks similar.

I have a few apps that I can measure distance with. I have used Google Maps and OnX, both are very accurate. I use OnX for a 480 yard shot at a pig, I had a tree at 420 and adjusted accordingly. I can usually find a fence line, tree, pond, etc as a reference point.
