Went hunting for the last 6 days in South Texas. We have all seen some unusual things while hunting, what I saw this week was a first for me. I saw this buck and he fit the criteria to shoot for a management buck due to age and antler characteristics for this ranch.
[Linked Image]
After I shot the buck above, about 20 minutes later this mature buck showed up. He saw the dead buck on the ground and got spooked and trotted off. Then made circle and came back around, but downwind this time.
[Linked Image]
When he got downwind and smelled the buck and the fresh blood he started jumping brush and cactus to get to him.
[Linked Image]
I could tell by his posture what I thought he was going to do.
[Linked Image]
And did what he looked like he was going to do, he rammed the dead buck on the ground. He was fighting the dead buck just as if he was alive.
[Linked Image]
He hit the buck just like he would as if they were squared off eye to eye driving him forward and then rolled him over.

Due to the lack of good light in the late afternoon the pics are grainy and blurry. But I was going to take the pics no matter how bad the lighting was. Due to photo posting limits I will add more below.

This all took place over about a 4 minute period and I got out of the blind to try to break them up. Knowing this buck was already stressed from the fight, I could decide to not walk up to them to break them up after this last photo. So I ran back to the Mule parked about 250 yards away and drove back towards them. The bigger buck immediately ran when I got within about 70 yards of them and he heard the Mule.

Man, he was tenderizing the meat for you. Wonder what a bloody mess he would have left if you hadn't have broken it up. I love that imagine of him walking up with ears back, he just looks the epitome of pissed off, lol.

That was my first thought too. He knew the dead buck was old and tough so he was helping ya out in appreciation that you shot the cull instead of him.....

That is a new one for me, I have seen a good buck hooking a dead doe trying to get her to stand up for him to mount.

I see multiple gobblers in the spring season beating up on a gobbler that was just shot but have never seen itwith deer

Thanks for sharing and as always great pics

Actually the buck I shot was either 3 or 4. But he was tenderized. When the older buck first rammed the dead buck his right main beam actually punctured through into the vital cavity behind the last rib. It left a gash over one inch long. You can see it in the fourth pic in the first set. About 10 yrs ago in the first week of March I found two bucks that had been fighting and got locked together. I found them about 2-3 days after they died. One had a broken neck and both bucks were poked full of holes. My guess is one or more other bucks killed the second buck after he could not get free from the buck with the broken neck.
Thanks everyone.

Seen video of bucks attacking another buck after getting shot but never witnessed it in person. That’s a once in a lifetime sighting. Congrats on the buck.

I've been told by breeders that they can't put a buck to sleep in the day time to dehorn it. They say as soon as the deer lays down and goes to sleep the other bucks will jump on him and kill him. They do the dehoring at night when the other bucks don't seem to pay attention.

Holy Carp!! That is one awesome set of pics! I didn't know deer would do that, but they are animals, lol. Just goes to show you....when you're down, they're gonna take advantage of you and dogpile that booty. Nature, it sure is harsh. And I noticed those deer are two different colors? What's up with that? I usually see one or the other, I think?
