The deer are in tip top shape this year. I process my own. Do any of you use the clean fat in your grind?

Nope do not use. Use beef or pork fat. Deer fat tends to taint and give a wangy taste, imo.

I am meticulous about removing as much deer fat as I can because the fat from a deer gets rancid rather quickly.

I use the fat from deer for one thing. I melt it down in a frying pan and then pour the oil in a container so that I can use it to rub down my rattling horns. I keep it in the freezer and is good for years. The oil from the fat is a great preservative and will not produce a foreign odor that might spook a deer. Now you know another one of my hunting secrets.... Adios, Gary

Don't care for taste of deer fat. I buy that cheap 75% hamburger from Wally World and mix it 25% with deer for my grind meat.

if you don't oil, they will dry up and get brittle. They will no longer produce the sharp, lively sound...more like knocking two sticks together. I am using horns from a buck that I killed nearly 30 years ago. Adios, Gary

that fat will have an off flavor but mostly it will leave a very waxy coat in your mouth thats tough to get rid of. It will harden very quickly also.

That hard fat, boiled and strained, is great for leather preservation, boots, work gloves, ball gloves

The oil is used only to preserve the rattling horns (real horns) not as a cover scent. HornSlayer, it will not go rancid if you store it in the deep freeze. I have some that is over 5 years old and it is still good. Adios, Gary

No. Trim out all the deer fat and use beef fat or pork fat if you want to add some.

I would use nothing else because any other product you use will produce some other odor. I was visiting with a guy who claimed to rattle lots of deer and he said that he used WD-40 to preserve his antlers. I smelled of them and he was right... In a pinch, I would use vegetable oil but getting tallow from a deer this time of the year is pretty easy. If nothing else, go to a deer processor, they will be discarding it. Adios, Gary

Yes I have used the fat from the deer I killed in the hamburger and leave the fat on the hindquarters when cutting steaks. I feed a lot of corn from August till March and the deer I process are in great shape. The fat tastes like a corn finished beef calf to me. I like the taste of the fat on a grilled steak or fried steak. On a deer that is not fat or one I kill off a place that does not feed much, I will use fat pork roast or real fat beef brisket to mix in with trimmings. I have a set of rattling horns that a friend gave me in 1988. Only thing I oil them with every so often, is linseed oil. They have a little more mass so they have a deeper tone and have had it since the start. I also blunt the tips of each tine to give the antlers a deeper tone, keep them from chipping and save my fingers/back of my hands from cuts when rattling.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?
